My Tips for Large Format Macro Photography: 1. Instead of extending the bellows, use shorter enlarger lenses to achieve higher magnification. For example, if you need to photograph an object the size of a 35mm film frame onto an 8x10 inch sheet, a regular 50mm enlarger lens would be ideal. If you’re photographing an object the size of a medium format film frame, use an 80mm or 90mm lens. These lenses are specifically designed for such optical setups in an enlarger, projecting an area like this onto a sheet of paper that matches the size of an 8x10 film. Just remember to reverse the lens, directing the front element toward the film and the rear element toward the subject. In general, imagine the setup of an enlarger: it’s film, a lens, and the projection of an image onto paper. Only instead of film, there will be the subject of your shooting, and instead of paper, there will be film. 2. Avoid using the shutter; instead, shoot in the dark and measure exposure by turning the light on and off. Since the shutter speed is typically several seconds, you can easily measure it using the switch. I insert the film holder, turn off all the lights, pull out the dark slide, open the shutter in B mode, wait about 10 seconds for the camera to stabilize, turn on the lighting, measure the exposure with a stopwatch, and then reverse the process. This way, the effect of camera shake is completely eliminated. And don’t forget about Schwarzschild effect. 3. It’s best to develop the film right after shooting to check for focus and exposure errors. I usually make the negative slightly denser, taking into account that I will use an unsharp mask when printing. And one last piece of advice: if possible, position the subject upside down.
