Sold Out. - AMA in the comments…. Made with over a thousand cracks in a single piece of glass. This sculpture was made with over a thousand cracks in a single piece of glass. It took multiple attempts to get right. Each time I made a mistake, the sculpture had to be started again from the beginning with a new piece of glass. The whole sculpting process, including failed attempts took a month (excluding planning and design time). The custom metal frame took a month to get made on top of that, it was engineered to support the weight and transport it safely across the world. This sculpture will be sold with an accompanying NFT. The purchaser of the NFT will not simply own a digital asset, but they will also own the original physical sculpture. The NFT you see at the end was created from several layers and layers of filming my cracked glass sculpture, reflecting a moving light source at multiple angles, combined into one seamless shot. Very honoured to have my work accepted & sold on @superrare.co . One of the most exclusive NFT’s platforms in the world. Achieving this level of skill with my work, in this size, and getting engineered frames to transport them across the world has been a massive journey but so worth it. If you change one thing in your next portrait painting make it this. Break the face into just two groups. Light and shadow. This simple step makes the entire painting process easier. Once you have separated light and shadow you have already made the biggest decisions. Placing colors and values becomes much simpler because you have a clear roadmap. From there work big to small. Start with the large value and color shapes before worrying about smaller ones. The big shapes will anchor your painting and guide you toward the details. Light and shadow first. Big to small second. *Disclaimer* this was a challenge I did a few months back where I attempted to paint a portrait from beginning to end with the most unsuitable brush i could find for painting portraits, (a wash brush) which is why I'm holding the brush from the bristles 🫣. A large flat brush or a fan brush would make more sense! But to be honest, the unsuitability of the brush forced me to just wing it and to do whatever i needed to do to make it work and to see what kind of result it would give me. Looking back, it might have been better to keep it at its looser stage without all the refinement, but I guess I still have some work to do with developing the skill of restraint. The final episode of my latest large painting. In this one I correct the face, particularly the alignment of the eyes, nose, and mouth. You have to keep in mind the rotation of the head in relation to your view point. In our case here we are positioned below the head, looking up at our subject, so the facial features are seen at a perspective. I paint the rest of the background, after which I sit back and judge the painting as a whole. At this point, I could call the painting done, but there are usually lots more small edits I end up making. I wasn’t satisfied with the hand and bracelet. I wanted to emphasize the foreshortening so I adjusted the contour of the arm as well I repainted the lighting/form on the hand to suggest the bending of the wrist. After this the outstretched fingers seemed to be too attention grabbing so I made them up to be more closed and overlapped some with the tree bark. I didn’t use reference, this was made up. Finally I glazed the outfit to be darker in relation to the skin to help accentuate the backlit nature of the lighting. At the very end, I didn’t record it, but I went back in to soften a lot of edges, and added some thick brush strokes with impasto medium. Voila, it is finished after 125.5 hours or so! The majority of this work was done in 2023, but I injured my hand at the end of the year and couldn’t put the final touches so it landed in 2024. Audio is from a recording I made of the Hamar Tribe having a party in November 2022. Can’t wait to return this May! Live sittings with Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, took place at the @saddlerscompany.saddlershall - the fantastic not for profit organisation who commissioned this project. The canvas was too large to transport back and forth, so for the sittings I used smaller canvases and took photos. I then completed the final painting from my studio.
