The hawk-moth caterpillar uses Batesian mimicry: it hides it
38,080

The hawk-moth caterpillar uses Batesian mimicry: it hides its real head, inflates the rear segments, and displays false eye spots that mimic a snake’s head. Predators are genetically wired to avoid snakes — even 0.3 seconds of swaying is enough for the caterpillar to escape. It has no nervous system that “knows” what it looks like: the whole performance is encoded in its genes and refined by millions of years of selection. Some species also hiss and make false strikes, even though they have no vocal cords or muscles for attack. Video author unknown. If you are the author (or rights holder), please contact us.

How to use a butterfly net successfully! When I was out catching butterflies and other lepidopterans like day flying moths today I realised that a lot of people have never even used a net before! It takes some practice, but this is the technique that works best for me! If you also use an insect net on the regular, do you use a different method? This method of course works for catching most flying insects, but as you'll learn, different species just like in a video game, have different difficulties to catch! I always feel like an animal crossing character walking around with my net catching bugs haha Scoop, twist, down on the ground... Then check to see if it worked and try again! #entomology #insects #insectsofinstagram #bugs #butterfly

189

The tarantula hawk is a large spider wasp (genera Pepsis and Hemipepsis) famous for its terrifying reproductive cycle and a sting widely considered one of the most painful in the world. Core Characteristics Appearance: They are massive wasps, reaching up to 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) in length. Most species have striking iridescent blue-black bodies and bright orange or amber wings—a form of aposematism (warning coloration) to deter predators. The Sting: Rated a 4.0 (the highest level) on the Schmidt sting pain index, its sting is described as "blinding, fierce, and shockingly electric". While the pain is excruciating, it typically lasts only about 5 minutes and is not dangerous to non-allergic humans. Diet: Adult tarantula hawks are actually nectarivorous, feeding on flowers like milkweed and mesquite. Only the larvae are carnivorous. Hunting and Life Cycle The name "tarantula hawk" comes from the female's habit of hunting tarantulas to provide for her offspring: Paralysis: The female tracks a tarantula, stings it to permanently paralyze it, and then drags the immobilized spider into a burrow. Egg Laying: She lays a single egg on the spider's abdomen and seals the burrow. Consumption: When the larva hatches, it burrows into the spider and eats it from the inside out. It strategically avoids vital organs to keep the spider alive (and fresh) for as long as possible. Few Predators: Due to their sting, they have almost no natural enemies. The greater roadrunner is one of the few animals capable of successfully preying on them. #realherpingwildlife #realherping #officialrealherpingwildlife #oficialrealherpingwildlife

A couple years ago I raised a dragonfly from a larva (“nymph”) into her adult form. I named her Syrax 🙂🐉 and fed her a diet of mostly mosquito larvae. Once she became an adult, I released her so she could live out the rest of her life helping to control mosquitoes in her adult form. Dragonflies are extremely efficient hunters, both in water and air! #entomology #bugstagram #dragonfly #mosquitocontrol #beneficialinsects

🐛🔔 How Cicada Broods Work – Nature’s Perfect Timekeepers Cicada broods are one of nature’s most mind-blowing survival strategies. These insects don’t just appear every summer — some species wait 13 or 17 YEARS underground before emerging all at once. 😳 The most famous periodical cicadas belong to the genus Magicicada. 🕳️ 1. The Underground Countdown After hatching, cicada nymphs fall to the ground and burrow underground. They feed on tree root sap for 13 or 17 years, slowly growing in darkness. Scientists believe they track time through: Soil temperature cycles Seasonal changes Internal biological clocks It’s like a natural alarm set for over a decade. ⏳ 🌡️ 2. The Great Emergence When soil temperatures hit about 18°C (64°F), millions crawl out at the same time. This synchronized event is called a brood. Why emerge together? ➡️ Predator overload. There are so many cicadas that birds and animals can’t eat them all. Survival through sheer numbers. 🎶 3. The Loudest Love Song Male cicadas produce one of the loudest insect sounds on Earth — up to 100 decibels! They use special vibrating organs called tymbals to attract females. Forests literally vibrate with sound during peak brood season. 🌳🔊 🥚 4. The Next Generation After mating: Females lay eggs in tree branches Adults die within weeks Eggs hatch and nymphs drop back into the soil And the cycle restarts… for another 13 or 17 years. 🤯 Why 13 & 17 Years? Both are prime numbers. This makes it harder for predators with shorter life cycles to sync up with them. Evolution at its smartest. 🧠✨ 🔥 Why It’s So Fascinating Perfect biological timing Mathematical survival strategy Massive synchronized behavior One of Earth’s rarest natural events Cicada broods prove that nature thinks long-term. #CicadaBrood #NatureUnlocked #WildlifeFacts #ScienceReels #NatureIsSmart #PrimeNumberPower #UndergroundLife #InsectWorld #EarthMysteries #BiologyFacts #NatureExplained #ViralScience #ForestSounds #MindBlownNature #EcoWonders #ScienceTok #WildPlanet #IncredibleNature #DidYouKnowFacts #NatureReels @cs2skincom

22,934

Behold this jaw-dropping example of Batesian mimicry: a hawk-moth caterpillar that has masterfully evolved to impersonate a deadly snake, fooling predators at every turn! By cleverly retracting its true head and inflating its plump rear segments, it unveils massive, realistic eye-spots that mimic a serpent's menacing glare—complete with scale-like patterns and a convincing "head" shape. Predators' instincts kick in hard, as they're hardwired to flee from snakes, giving this clever imposter just enough time to slither away unscathed. It's evolution's genius deception at work, turning vulnerability into a lifesaving superpower through precise coloration, texture, and behavior. Video credits or removal?
