Picture it. Quebec City. 1956. Dark mahogany walls. White tablecloths Waiters in bow ties and white jackets. Tableside preparation of French classics. Flambé’d dishes. Well, you don’t need to picture it! You can still experience this old-world restaurant. Le Continental has been open in the heart of Old Quebec, steps from the Château Frontenac since 1956 in a building from the 1840s. This is really a unique dining experience that transports you back in time. Quebec City is filled with great restaurants, but we had to try this old school French classic. Bourdain dined here and it was on Parts Unknown. Admittedly, we were skeptical of whether this was going to be all sizzle and no steak. Was this going to be the kind of place where watching the flambe in action would be better than the actual food? From the moment we were seated at a lovely window seat facing the courtyard, it was a perfect experience. Our waiter Andea was amazing. Funny, personable and proud of what he does. Part showman. Part Chef. After a few delicious cocktails, Andrea began preparing our Caesar salad for 2. And yes, many restaurants do a tableside prep of Caesar but turned out to be one of the best Caesars we’ve ever had. Nurkin remarked that she may be off Caesars for a while. While we were finishing our salads, it was time for Andrea to start prepping my filet mignon. This specific dish has been on the menu for more than 50 years so yeah, I had to get it. He lit the burner, put A LOT of butter in the pot and we were off. More butter continued to get plopped into the pot before it was Flambé time. My steak turned out a perfect medium rare and was phenomenal. Dessert time. Surely you don’t come to a classic French restaurant that specializes in table side Flambé and don’t get the Crêpes Suzette for 2 with a scoop of ice cream. The final part of the show featured lots and lots of butter and the Flambé was fantastic. Overall this was one of the most memorable dining experiences we’ve had in years. Thankfully I did 30,000 steps a day so all that butter didn’t count. If you are visiting Quebec City, Le Continental is a must. #quebeccite #bonjourquebec #quebeccityfood
