“L-M-N-O-P” is not one letter 😅 I remember asking a student: “What letter is this?” (Pointing to N.) She confidently said: “L-M-N!” I said, “Try again.” She paused… thought hard… and said: “N-O-P.” That moment I noticed that her brain had stored it as a chunk. So I switched to something I learned in Australia 🇦🇺 — the THRASS alphabet chant (Teaching Handwriting Reading And Spelling Skills). Instead of singing letters in a melody that blends them together, we: ✔️ Say each letter clearly ✔️ Give it space ✔️ Keep them separate in the brain No blending into “elemenopee.” ✨ Sometimes the smallest shifts make the biggest difference. #4kteacher #earlyliteracy #phonicsinstruction #thrass #alphabetlearning preschoolteacher montessorimindset teachingreading literacydevelopment teacherlife

If blending letter sounds isn’t working yet, it’s not your child. Don’t give up ! Before children can blend, individual phonics sounds need to feel automatic. This is a normal stage in early reading.Go back to the individual sounds and Trace the sound with your finger in sand , foam or flour and say it out loud , make th shape with playdoh ✨ Follow me for more easy calm, clear phonics guidance for parents teaching at home. I have so many ideas for letters sounds activities on my page! Take a look 👀 #lettersounds #phonics #parentsofinstagram #helpingparents #learningisfun

Wanna see how my 3-year-old assistant helps during tutoring? 😆 Apparently the job description includes: ✔️ Emptying every phonics and number resource in the studio ✔️ Creating a very important phonics and numbers train across the floor ✔️ Carefully sorting tiny pieces into very serious piles But honestly… watching her explore letters, sounds and numbers like this reminds me exactly why I love what I do. Learning doesn’t always look neat and tidy. Sometimes it looks like curiosity. Sometimes it looks like play. And sometimes it looks like a giant “train” of phonics cards across the tutoring room floor. 🚂 And I wouldn’t have it any other way ❤️

There is so much packed into our phonics lessons. Fluency. Word work. Decodable text. And then… sentence encoding. If I’m being honest, that was the piece that kept getting skipped in my room. Not because it isn’t important, but because it felt messy. Whiteboards everywhere. Erasing. No real accountability. Once I gave my students a dedicated space to write, everything changed. Now they: ✔️ Encode the sentence ✔️ Have picture support ✔️ Get handwriting practice ✔️ Stay engaged (because yes… they can color after) And the BEST part? I’m not skipping it anymore. If sentence encoding is the part that feels hardest to fit in, comment ENCODE and I’ll send you the link. 💛 #literacy4littlelearners #kindergartenclassroom #phonics #kindergartenteachers

I see this every single year. They know their letter sounds. They pass the sound check. They look confident during phonics. And then you hand them a word. And they go: /m/ … /a/ … /t/ … … 👀 Blending is a completely separate skill from knowing letter sounds. And some of our kids get stuck right there in the gap. Before I share what I do to fix it in Part 2, I’m curious - 👇 What does this sound like in your classroom? Do they: • Freeze after tapping? • Restart over and over? • Guess based on the last sound? • Blend everything except the vowel? Tell me what you’re seeing. Let’s compare notes. And if you have a teammate who needs this conversation, send this to them. Part 2 is where we fix it. 💛 #literacy4littlelearners #kindergarten #phonics #kindergartenclassroom #structuredliteracy
