The indri lemur, native to Madagascar’s lush rainforests, is easily recognized by its striking black-and-white coat and haunting, melodic calls that echo through the trees. These agile, tree-dwelling primates use their powerful legs to leap impressive distances between branches. Feeding primarily on leaves, they play a key role in their ecosystem by aiding in seed dispersal. Sadly, the indri faces the threat of habitat loss, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts to ensure the survival of these remarkable creatures. Dr. Lydia Greene, @lemurscientist, quietly observes Gabe, a Coquerel’s sifaka lemur, at the @dukelemurcenter as part of her research on the dietary preferences of this species. A sudden alert from other lemurs nearby in the forested enclosure caused alarm, but all was well. Dr. Greene spends hours watching lemurs outside and notes what they eat, even if they are high up in the trees, and she has to search for fallen bits of leaves or fruits to identify their chosen snack. The staff and researchers at the Duke Lemur Center wear masks even when outdoors out of an abundance of caution, especially when in relative proximity. Lemurs are susceptible to COVID-19, and they can’t be vaccinated as humans can. Lemurs are the most endangered group of mammals on the planet, so every precaution is taken to ensure their well-being. The collar seen on Gabe was for a short-term study and it is essentially a Fit Bit. The Duke Lemur Center use positive reinforcement training to teach voluntary collaring. This is much less stressful for the animals! The DLC does NOT allow any research that will harm their animals. To ensure animal safety and well-being, all project proposals must be reviewed and approved by both the DLC Research Committee and the Duke Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, an in-depth process that takes 4-6 weeks. If anyone had concerns about the collar, the study would not have been approved. This is another reason Lydia’s observations are so important. If, in her hours observing the animals, she sees any indicators of discomfort, etc. caused by the collar, that will be immediately reported and addressed by the research, husbandry, and veterinary teams.
