#Lime Plastering

This week at the Tywi centre a group of us got our hands dirty with lime plasters on the second week of their Heritage Plastering course. We were able to pick the brains of our very knowledgeable instructor Joe Moriarty and be in the perfect place to experiment and make mistakes. During this course we take a number of training bays and change them from slightly abused to finished. We start with the base coat to take out the unevenness of the wall and to provide a background for the second float coat to be keyed on later. If you ever get the chance to see above the laths of an historical building, you’ll see the nibs which fold through the gaps and firmly hold the ceiling on. The ceiling will need a good 3-4 weeks for the next coat to give it time to carbonate. But it’s worth the wait, with the result not only being the most suitable for repairs to existing, but also appropriate for sustainable buildings made from natural materials. Lime plaster internal wall on a farmhouse. Second coat of the lime plaster and we learnt that I’m going to need a lot more practise before I can pass as a plasterer 😂 We also learnt that second coat was finished with a churn brush rather than scratch coat which creates a more gentle key. Extra time was also taken with levelling of the walls as best as possible, so where the walls were uneven, more plaster was applied to try and create a more level and even wall.
