Plasterers not wearing goggles is one of the great mysteries of the building trade, right up there with “where have all my socks gone?” and “who’s been washing out my bucket with cement?” Truth is, plastering is basically a blizzard of dust, lime, grit, and tiny airborne regrets… and yet most plasterers are out here raw-dogging it with nothing but squinty eyes and blind optimism. Part of it is tradition. Plasterers have this ancient belief that PPE is something you buy, admire for five minutes, then leave in the van forever like a museum exhibit. Another part is comfort. Goggles steam up instantly, so within 30 seconds you’re basically skimming a wall while looking through two fogged-up fish tanks. At that point you’re not plastering, you’re doing interpretive rendering. And then there’s the ego factor. A plasterer will happily balance on a plank, holding a hawk full of muck, while dust hits them directly in the eyeballs, because admitting you need goggles feels, in trade logic, like admitting defeat. It’s always: “Goggles? Nah mate, I’ve got eyelashes.” As if eyelashes are some kind of industrial filtration system. But the real reason is simple: plasterers are too busy chasing the perfect finish to notice they’re slowly turning their eyes into sandpaper. A plasterer will protect a wall like it’s the Sistine Chapel, but protect their own eyesight? “No thanks, I’ll just blink aggressively.” That’s the trade for you. Say it’s basically just like putting builder gel on your nails, or icing a giant cake 💅🏻🎂 Now, I appreciate this was a tiny wall and I probably did an awful job, but it got it done for pretty cheap and now I’d feel more confident giving a bigger wall a go.
