On the night of April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln went to Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., to watch a performance of Our American Cousin. During the play, he was shot in the back of the head by John Wilkes Booth, a supporter of the Confederacy.

Arlington National Cemetery’s radioactive grave. It belongs to Richard McKinley, a United States Army specialist who died in 1961 during the only fatal nuclear accident on U.S. soil, known as SL-1. His burial site remains sealed, guarded, and under special protocols. The SL-1 incident occurred in Idaho, when the manual extraction of a control rod caused a critical reaction. The explosion released 20,000 megawatts in 0.01 seconds and contaminated his body with radioactive isotopes. He was buried in a lead coffin, covered with cement and sealed in metal. “Under no circumstances is it to be moved.” #gravestone #cemeteryexploring #cemetery #arlingtonnationalcemetary Source: Find a Grave https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/5934/richard_leroy-mckinley Wiki SL 1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SL-1 Arlington National Cemetery https://education.arlingtoncemetery.mil/Portals/2/Cold-War-Walking-Tour.pdf

Today in Washington, DC 💔⚰️ After 238 years of production, the Secretary of the Treasury has made the cents-less decision to stop minting the penny. Today’s Funeral for the Penny took place at the Lincoln Memorial and featured eulogies from Mary Todd Lincoln, a real Lincoln family decendant, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson. The funeral also featured several Abraham Lincolns, a real casket transported by hearse, live performances, and a contest for the oldest penny. Mourners also brought their own pennies to pay their respects and add to the casket. Most people walking through Lincoln Park have no idea they’re actually walking over what used to be one of Chicago’s largest cemeteries. Before it became a public park, this land was home to the old Chicago City Cemetery. By the late 1800s, the city decided to relocate graves as Chicago rapidly expanded. But here’s the part most people don’t realize. Not every body was moved. Thousands of remains are believed to still be beneath the park today. #funeral #cemetery #Chicago

A Call to the Community For years, Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery has suffered from neglect — thieves have stolen headstones, vandals have damaged graves, and time has left the grounds in disrepair. In 2023, Aisha Woods stepped in after the previous owner had to surrender the cemetery for health reasons. Since then, she has volunteered her time to restore and protect this sacred space — helping families locate their loved ones’ resting places, clearing debris, removing trash, and installing security cameras to keep the grounds safe. Aisha’s passion comes from a deeply personal place: her mother, Marjorie L. Woods, rests here. In her honor, Aisha founded the Margie L. Woods Foundation, dedicated to supporting and revitalizing forgotten cemeteries like Lincoln Memorial. People wanting to stay connected to what is happening in the cemetery can join the Facebook page “Families of Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Carson”. A GoFundMe has been set up to help breathe new life into Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. Every contribution helps restore dignity and peace to those who have passed.
