Recently I had the chance to see one of the most underrated lizards in Thailand, the five-banded gliding lizard (Draco quinquefasciatus). A fascinating albeit diminutive member of the Draco (literally meaning ‘dragon’) genus, a hallmark of South-East Asian rainforests. The ‘flying lizards’ spend their lives foraging for ants and termites on the trunks of trees, actively using their wings to glide from tree to tree in search of mates, new prey or to escape predators. It is not uncommon at all to see one glide through the rainforest during the daytime - although catching them is a whole other challenge! #lizards #lizardsofinstagram #lizardsofinsta #lizardsofig #lizard #reptiles #reptilesofinstagram #herps #herping #herpetology #herpetologia #herpetologist #fieldherping #fieldherpetology #herpingthailand #exploreherpetology #flyinglizard #draco #glidinglizard #thailand #thailandwildlife

No wings. No jetpack. Just pure biological engineering 🦎✨ Meet the Draco lizard — aka the flying dragon. This little reptile has ribs that extend outward like a parachute, turning skin into wings! It doesn’t flap — it glides between trees with steering powered by its tail. No CGI. No tricks. Just real-life dragon physics in action. Drop a 🔥 if this blew your mind Drop a 🐉 if you thought dragons were only in movies #DiscoveryPrime #FlyingDragon #DracoLizard #NatureEngineering #GlidingReptile #RealLifeDragon #WildlifeWonder #AnimalAviation #BiologicalWings #GlideGameStrong

Did This Lizard Just Turn Into Charmander? In a video, a lizard appears to have a tail that glows like the flame of Charmander from Pokémon. However, this visual effect can be explained by the physics of light reflection and viewing angles. Around midday, sunlight strikes the ground almost vertically and travels nearly parallel to nearby vertical surfaces, such as walls. When the lizard flicks its tail, the angle of the tail shifts just enough to reflect this sunlight directly into the camera lens. Due to the high contrast in the video footage, this brief reflection appears as a bright, glowing effect, even though the tail itself emits no light. This is an example of specular reflection, where light reflects off a surface at a specific angle, much like a mirror. #science #physics #learning #explained #lizard

Do flying fish really fly? 🐟🦅🦋 🎥 @aftermathsportfishing 📷 @kaylassmithphotography Flying fish actually can glide out of the water using their long, wing-like fins. They don’t flap their fins like birds, but they swim very fast underwater and then launch themselves up and out of the sea to escape from predators such as larger fish. ✈️🐟 Once in the air, their large pectoral fins act like wings and let them glide forward over the surface for many meters before landing again. Some flying fish can glide hundreds of meters (over 200m or 650ft) and stay in the air for several seconds by dipping their tail back into the water for extra push - a technique known as “taxiing.” 🌈 🚕 🌊 Even more fascinating, flying fish play a vital role in coral reef ecosystems by spawning near reefs, where their eggs provide food for smaller marine life.🪸🐠 🌍💙 #ocean #underwater #coral #coralreef #oceanlife #marinebiology #marineconservation #restoration #coralrestoration #flyingfish #anemones #dolphins #sponge #otter #conservation #diving #snorkling #antarctica #narwhal #penguins #whale #whales #whaleshark #humpbackwhale #seaslug #turtle #seaturtle #manatee #oceanthemajesty #killerwhale
