I had seen something like this before—high in the mountains, where the air was thin and the world felt untouched. The Lotus Mantis, a rare creature that had landed on my palm just as the sun rose, its petal-like wings glowing in the cold morning light. I thought that was a once-in-a-lifetime encounter. But now, standing by the pond, I realized I was wrong. The lotus before me swayed gently, its petals closed as if waiting. I might have walked past it without a second glance—until it moved. Not like a flower shifting in the wind, but like something alive. The bud breathed. Slender legs adjusted, gripping the broad green leaf beneath it. Slowly, deliberately, the petals began to part—not just unfolding, but awakening. Hidden eyes watched me from within the bloom, calculating, aware. The flower had become a creature. Locals call it the Sentinel Mantis, a guardian of still waters and silent places. Unlike its mountain-dwelling cousin, this one did not seek hands to land on. It remained rooted in its world, opening only when it chose, disappearing just as easily. For a moment, it let me see it. Then, as if deciding I had seen enough, it folded itself back into a perfect, delicate bud. Twice now, I had seen a lotus come to life.
