Not sure if your child’s i-Ready scores are actually measuring their reading ability? Me either. To be clear: these skills are a baseline. If your child is struggling significantly with the skills below by the end of kindergarten, it’s time to get more information and support. Reading difficulties usually grow over time when foundational gaps are left unaddressed, and yes, we can see these gaps already in kindergarten! Here’s what most children should know and be able to do by the end of kindergarten to be ready for 1st grade. No iPad assessment needed. 1️⃣ Concepts of Print (reading behaviors) Can they: • Hold a book correctly? • Track print left to right? • Return to the left side at the end of a line? • Identify a letter, word, and sentence in a book? 2️⃣ Letter Names, Formation, & Sounds Some kindergarten programs move into more advanced phonics skills, but a strong foundation matters most.
