Scientists have revived the Dire Wolf, a huge wolf species that’s been extinct for 10,000 years - this is the first time their howls have been recorded. These two wolves were brought back from extinction using genetic edits derived from a complete dire wolf genome, meticulously reconstructed by “Colossal” from ancient DNA found in fossils dating back 11,500 and 72,000 years. #direwolf #wolves #extinct #wolves🐺 #wolvesofinstagram

“The dire wolf is back… kinda. 🐺❄️ Colossal Biosciences stunned the world by creating wolves that look and act like the legendary dire wolf! 🐺 Using gene-editing and ancient DNA, modern gray wolves were modified to mimic traits of the Ice Age predator. Meet Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi—a glimpse of what once roamed North America. Here’s the twist: these aren’t true dire wolves. ⚡️ They’re genetically engineered proxies—gray wolves with select edits, not the full ancient genome. Still, it’s one of the boldest steps in de-extinction science, merging past and future! 🌎🧬 Like & follow @healthymindset_now (IG) before this disappears from your feed . Today is Day 5 of Wolf Awareness Week, and I want to talk about my favorite myth to dispel when it comes to wolves: Alpha wolves are not a real thing! At this point, pretty much everyone is familiar with Alpha Theory. Not only has it impacted the public’s perception of wolves, but certain dog trainers still do things like roll and pin their animals or otherwise physically dominate them to show that they are in charge. Tragically, this does nothing except instill fear and distrust. Also, it’s permeated pop culture so thoroughly that toxic men call themselves “alpha bros,” falsely equating themselves with the wolf. If it isn’t real, why do we think it is? In the late 1800s, a biologist studying wolves in captivity coined the term “Alpha Theory” to explain domineering and submissive behaviors he observed in those wolves. Fast forward to the 1970s, when Dr. David Mech—one of the world’s leading wolf biologists—published research corroborating those findings. Mech’s work was exceptionally impactful on the study of wolves, and fun fact: this popularization of the term is his biggest career regret. He actually spent years unsuccessfully trying to remove his books from shelves to help dispel this myth. If multiple biologists observed and agreed upon this behavior, then what led to the passionate attempt to quell its notoriety? Alpha Theory was the result of studying wolves in captivity in artificial packs, which do not represent pack structure in the wild. Essentially, these studies were observing a bunch of “random” wolves thrown together into habitats. Wolves in the wild, however, live in familial units! Just as a bunch of random humans forced together may not all get along, the same was true of wolves. The average wolf pack is comprised of approximately 5–7 wolves. The “alpha” wolves? Those are actually what we call the “breeding” or “dominant” pair—or Mom and Dad! Just as we humans have the job of teaching children how to be functioning adults, sometimes requiring hard conversations or discipline, wolf pups and yearlings require the same from their parents. Imagine hearing this howl in the wild… "🥶" The Dire Wolf was larger and stronger than modern wolves and disappeared over 12,000 years ago. Now scientists are researching ancient DNA that could help us understand — and possibly recreate — extinct species. Nature is crazy. 🌍 #DireWolf #Animal #male #Female
