WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR ITEMS It’s not rocket science. It’s common sense, so I don’t know why so many resellers keep it secret! The difference between me and a casual vintage shopper is that I AM AT THESE PLACES CONSISTENTLY and I’m willing to put in the work to restore an item that’s in disrepair. Here are my top places for finding great vintage items. 1 - Facebook Marketplace: sourcing facebook is the easiest way to find affordable items to resell. You can do it from your bed and pay via Venmo. Of course, you have to watch out for scammers…which are getting smarter and more convincing. They even have caught on to the “vintage craze” so BEWARE! 2 - Goodwill/Thrift Stores: a great way to turn your “retail therapy” into a profession! I always pick items that speak to me. Be careful with those helping you load furniture. Sometimes they are really rough with items! 3. Estate Sales: If you an early bird that wants to catch the best worms. Line up at 6am on a Thursday-Sunday and find some cool items. Sometimes estate sales can be expensive, but if you can wait until the last day, you’ll snag stuff at a fraction of the cost. 4. Other Resellers: as you make friends in the reseller community, you’ll find that you can swap items or buy from other resellers in your area. Sometimes I’m just not in the mood to sand down a piece & I’ll hand it off to a reselling friend and visa versa. 5. Auctions: some cities have local antique auctions or you can find online auctions. Don’t forget to send a bid on EBay item near you that requires local pickup. 6. The streets: I started my business picking up curbside finds. In this “Tesla generation” many people don’t have trucks to take larger items to donation locations so they put them on the curb-even vintage stuff. What are your favorite places to source? TODAYS PICK… Was definitely unordinary! We traveled to a marketplace fabric pick and this was during the Facebook outage which I hadn’t saved the address in my phone. So I drove to the town and stopped at the gas station and asked about the post and they pointed me to a lady that literally KNEW IT ALL. She pointed me in the right direction of the address and I was shocked that she knew. Went to the address, found the place and NO ONE ANSWERED. We checked three houses and no one answered the door. So we were on our way home and I said “Let’s stop in this old building.” And so we did… and met the sweetest people who inherited the building and contents from family which included tons of old fabric, yarn, trims, and even an old car inside. I found rolls of neutral fabric and a few damask bolts. It’s picks like this where we are literally saving these from ruin. I’ll definitely be back. Wanted to show y’all this is what I go through trying to find fabric for the backs or even fronts sometimes. It’s still a huge amount of work because we try not to order anything online and find it locally. 👉🏼The best part of selling antiques isn’t the stuff…it’s the people. And to find the BEST stuff, you’ve gotta slow down and talk to people. 🤝Make the connection. Shake someone’s hand and look them in the eye long enough for their eye color to register. Listen to stories. Don’t be in a rush. Help them out and answer questions. ☎️ Maybe even give them your phone number (one reason I love my old school business cards). The antique world is still very old fashioned and relies on personal relationships and networking in person. You can only go so far online. So the next time you do a FBMP pickup, don’t just drop your cash and run. Take time at the cash register of your favorite antique store to strike up a conversation and ask some questions. Accept the invitation into your neighbor’s home and listen to her stories. 🫶And along the way, you’ll find a treasure better than the most rare antique: friendship. What do you think?
