This species is known for its extreme size difference between males and females. Males are no bigger than a peanut, while females can grow up to 6 feet long and weigh 40,000 times more than their tiny counterparts. 🛡️ A Cloak of Protection The name “blanket” comes from the sheets of webbing between some of their arms, which they spread out when threatened. This display makes them appear larger and more intimidating to predators. 🔍 A Rare Encounter Normally drifting through the open ocean, this individual was spotted right off the shore at @lembehresort house reef—an unusual sighting for such a deep-sea wanderer. I don’t often shoot macro photography, but I make an exception for bees. Years ago, I used to be afraid to get close, but now I can spend hours among them in the spring, watching and photographing as they go about their work. Honeybees are generally not aggressive when left undisturbed, and studies show they even display simple forms of learning and memory — which makes observing them all the more fascinating. In some of these photos, you can see the large clumps of pollen building up on its hind legs in specialized structures called pollen baskets (corbiculae).
