This was out of the way, somewhere deep in the mountains of Chiang Mai. The roads were pretty intense, full of sharp curves and steep climbs, but we went for it out of pure curiosity 😂 Ended up finding one of the most peaceful villages we’ve ever been to. Mae Kampong hit different 🏔️

Just an hour ride from Chiang Mai (we took our bike but buses run there too) and you’re in this peaceful mountain village that feels like a completely different world. 

We packed so much into one day - hiking, waterfalls, coffee plantations, amazing food - but honestly loved it so much we stayed the night.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀 Mae Kampong is hidden deep in the mountains of northern Thailand and feels nothing like the places most people visit. It is around 90 mins by taxi from Chiang Mai, then a further 20 mins in a local 4 x 4 up a steep jungle road that normal cars cannot handle. That journey alone filters out the crowds. The first thing you notice is the smell. Cool mountain air mixed with wet wood, coffee, leaves and rain. Wooden houses are built directly into the hillside, stacked along a narrow road as the village follows the natural shape of the valley. Below the village, a stream runs through the jungle, always close enough that you hear it constantly. That sound mixes with birds, wind in the trees and the slow rhythm of daily life. Mae Kampong was first settled around 1914 and became known for miang tea. Locals still grow and ferment the leaves today, and nothing here feels staged. People sit outside their homes, cooking, talking, drying tea leaves and herbs. When we visited, we saw barely any other westerners. No chains. No rush. Just small cafés built into wooden homes, mist rolling through the trees and jungle closing in around you. Book in advance by messaging the Mae Kampong-SanKampang-Hot Springs van company directly on Facebook. Grab and Bolt drivers will take you there but almost never accept the return trip so you will be stranded at the top of a mountain with no phone signal and no options. 🏨 Mae Kampong has almost no accommodation visible on standard booking platforms. Most stays are family homestays booked directly with the village or through Airbnb. Hostelz compares the same dorm on Booking.com and Hostelworld side by side, saving you up to 23%, and the largest hostel database gives you the most complete picture of what budget options actually exist before you arrive and find nothing available. 🌄 The sunrise red truck from Kew Fin viewpoint costs 100 THB return and is arranged through your accommodation the night before. The truck leaves before dawn and you need to be at the meeting point on time because it does not wait. Bring a warm layer because at 1,506 meters above sea level it is significantly colder than Chiang Mai at night and most people are not dressed for it. ☕ Mae Kampong produces its own tea and coffee and the village has multiple cafes sitting directly over the stream with prices that reflect local rather than tourist economics. It is one of only two temples in Chiang Mai province where the Ubosot sits in the water. Most visitors walk straight past it on the way to the cafes without realizing what it is.
