It’s Wednesday, so we’re sharing training tips with @nickbarefitness integrating the Maffetone Method with the 80/20 training rule for triathlon! 🚀 This combo encourages 80% of your workouts to be in Zone 2 heart rate, perfectly aligning with Maffetone’s emphasis on aerobic development without overtraining. The synergy between maintaining low intensity (where talking is easy) for the majority of your training, and pushing hard for only 20%, leads to comprehensive endurance and performance without overdoing it. Use the Maffetone method or 80/20 approach for a stronger, smarter training headed into race day. #AlphaWinRacing #ADistanceForEveryone #SwimBikeRun #Triathlon #Endurance

I do ~80% of my conditioning at ~75% of my max heart rate. I trained under the “Maffetone Method” during my Ironman chapter. This allowed me to develop an aerobic engine (oxygen efficiency), and muscle endurance. Over a 4 year period my run pace dropped substantially while maintaining the same heart rate. Volume benefited me more than anything else when it came to building endurance fitness. Both run volume and bike volume.

Maffetone Method What is it ? & do I agree with it ? I totally with the basic premise of the Maffetone Method, to improve your aerobic capacity ie; most runners lack aerobic fitness and the best way to improve endurance is through aerobic training. So in this part I am in 100% in agreement The majority of runners – particularly beginners must prioritize easy, aerobic running. It’s the foundation upon which more difficult training is built. Problem with Maff-Method ‼️ Maffetone focusses on aerobic function, (& promotes high fat/low carb diets as part of the package), yet runners must develop more abilities than simply aerobic fitness and fat burning efficiency. Without well-rounded athleticism, runners will never reach their full potential. OPINION: Rather than focus exclusively on one type of training (aerobic) at the expense of other essential preparation, there’s a better way. The 3 fundamentals of training Build a foundation that includes fitness in three major areas: 1. Aerobic Capacity 2. Strength 3. Neuromuscular coordination. 1. Aerobic capacity is built through easy mileage, long runs, and workouts like tempos, and fartleks. 2. Strength is also built with high mileage & long runs, but also includes S&C routines and core workouts. 3. Neuromuscular coordination is built through strides, & hill sprints Also, initially I suggest to train by Time NOT Distance The heart is a muscular pump it does not know how far your run. The heart just knows how many beats a minute it does and for how long. Running to time helps stop you getting stressed over target pace and distance, while you build up fitness. When you transition to specific race preparation, I suggest runners focus on pace, and not so much running to time. You must work out strategies to help you maintain your target race pace. Developing fitness as a runner takes time, so focus on these essentials and get them right, before progressing to race specific preparation. Enjoy your training. Maffetone method for calculating Zone 2 heart rate #zone2 #heartratetraining #maffetonemethod #lowintensity

The Maffetone method ! ⬇️ First, follow @thegrateful.runner for more running tips ! Also save this to come back to it later 📌 I’ve been a runner for many years and I noticed my pace was fast in the past but my heart rate was really high and I felt exhausted after every run. After some research, I discovered the Maffetone Method. You basically slow down your running so your heart rate can be lower (aim for 60-70% of your max heart rate). When your heart rate gets too high, walk until it’s back down. Then pick it back up. Do this until you plateau in progress and then add ONE speed session a week. This method has made my easy pace 40 seconds faster each month since I started. Have you tried it before? If not, try it for yourself and tell me all about it! ☀️ #runner #running #maffetone #philmaffetone #easyrun #marathon #ultramarathon #ultramarathonprep #marathonprep #endurance #endurancerunning #longrun #slowrunner #slowrunning #slowdown #trusttgeprocess

“Heart rate based training,” also known as Zone 2 training or the Maffetone Method is a great way to make quick progress towards your marathon goals or aerobic conditioning in general. It feels like you are “running slow in order to run fast,” which is exactly how it works. One way to define your ideal aerobic training zone is find your maximum heart rate (run all-out for 5k and see your max heart rate) and multiply by .7 to .8 to identify your ideal aerobic training zone. It’s also important to do faster runs as part of your marathon training plan, but this guideline is helpful for building an aerobic base. MAF 180 FORMULA EXPLAINED👨🏽🔬⤵️ The Maffetone Method is a way of calculating your ideal maximum aerobic heart rate. 🔢 Take the number 180 and subtract your age. I’m 24 years old, so my MAF180 number = 156bpm. You will need a heart rate tracker to monitor this number throughout your run. I use the Nike Apple Watch ✅, but I’ve seen runners using Garmin, Coros, Whoop, and the Apple Watch Ultra as their fitness watch ⌚️ This method shows you the ideal heart rate at which to build aerobic fitness. You should find this heart rate comfortable! There will always be outliers to rules like this, so use this method as a reference - but listen to your body. Run your easy runs at an EASY pace. If it starts to feel hard… slow down, it’s that simple 🤝 - - #runningtips #hybridathlete #hybridtraining
