Most people think sub-3 on MAF is impossible. Low heart rate. Slow miles. Too patient. But Dr Phil Maffetone’s method changed the way I train. It’s not the goal — it’s the base. I ran 2:58 in New York. 👨‍💼 Full-time job 👨‍👦‍👦 Two kids ❌ No sponsors Three months of MAF. Then I added speed. That’s how you break 3. And now I’m building again — a long way east. #Maffetone #MAF #MAFTraining #Bahrain #Marathon #Running

MAF 180 FORMULA EXPLAINED👨🏽‍🔬⤵️ The Maffetone Method is a way of calculating your ideal maximum aerobic heart rate. 🔢 Take the number 180 and subtract your age. I’m 24 years old, so my MAF180 number = 156bpm. You will need a heart rate tracker to monitor this number throughout your run. I use the Nike Apple Watch ✅, but I’ve seen runners using Garmin, Coros, Whoop, and the Apple Watch Ultra as their fitness watch ⌚️ This method shows you the ideal heart rate at which to build aerobic fitness. You should find this heart rate comfortable! There will always be outliers to rules like this, so use this method as a reference - but listen to your body. Run your easy runs at an EASY pace. If it starts to feel hard… slow down, it’s that simple 🤝 - - #runningtips #hybridathlete #hybridtraining

MAF Method, is essentially very GOOD, it helps improve aerobic capacity and it has helped many runners. I agree with the premise of the Maffetone theory, that the majority of runners, should prioritize easy, aerobic running. It’s the foundation upon which more difficult training is built 👏👏 HOWEVER…… Maff-Method has some PROBLEMS It focusses on aerobic function, yet runners must develop more abilities than simple aerobic fitness and fat burning efficiency, also many runners with higher than expected, max heart rates, often can only walk at their MAF HR. NOTE: this is a separate issue from runners with poorly developed aerobic systems who need to walk to keep under their MAF HR IMPORTANT if your HR doesn’t fit MAF or if you don’t have a heart rate monitor, I suggest training to feeling Ask these 3 simples Qs when you run 1. Does it feel easy ? 2. Can I breath through my nose 3. Can I talk freely ? If the answer is no…. Slow down. HOW I would incorporate MAF into my training. In my opinion, rather than focus exclusively on one type of training (aerobic) we should focus on 3 fundamentals. The 3 fundamentals of training Build a base foundation needs fitness in three major areas: 1. Aerobic Capacity 2. Strength 3. Neuromuscular coordination. 1. Aerobic capacity is built through easy mileage, long runs, tempos runs & fartleks. MAF can fit in this section for the long runs and easy runs. 2. Strength can be built with high mileage & long runs, but also includes gym routines and core workouts. 3. Neuromuscular coordination is built through strides, & hill sprints 👉Initially I suggest to train by Time NOT Distance as you build fitness 👉When you transition from Base training to race preparation, I suggest runners focus on pace and distance and not so much running to time. Developing fitness as a runner takes time, so focus on all the essentials and get them right. If not sure…. Why not get one of my training plans… click the links in my bio 😉 TEXT copyright © @run.nrg #maffetonemethod #aerobictraining #easyrunning #funrunner #trainsmart #runnersofinstagram #runnersworld #runnerslife #runningman #onvacation #runningmotivation

“Heart rate based training,” also known as Zone 2 training or the Maffetone Method is a great way to make quick progress towards your marathon goals or aerobic conditioning in general. It feels like you are “running slow in order to run fast,” which is exactly how it works. One way to define your ideal aerobic training zone is find your maximum heart rate (run all-out for 5k and see your max heart rate) and multiply by .7 to .8 to identify your ideal aerobic training zone. It’s also important to do faster runs as part of your marathon training plan, but this guideline is helpful for building an aerobic base. The MAF Method

The MAF Method The easiest, quickest, and most accurate method of working out your Zone 2 threshold, if you don’t want to get a lab test. If you don’t train using HR methods then just run at a conversational pace However if you do like using HR And haven’t had your Vo2 max lab tested. (Which will always be the holy grail btw) Here’s how it works: MAF stands for Maximum Aerobic Function. It was developed by Dr. Phil Maffetone and it’s all about improving endurance, fat burning, and recovery, by training your aerobic system properly. 🧠 The Formula: 180 – your age = your Zone 2 heart rate That’s it. If you’re 34 like me, it’s 180 – 34 = 146 bpm - 10 and that’s the lower end If you’re just getting into training, recovering from illness, or injury-prone, you subtract another 5. 🎯 Why use it? Because most people run too hard on easy days. Zone 2 is the foundation of endurance. It builds your aerobic engine, helps with recovery, and actually makes you faster long-term. When you train too hard, too often, you spike fatigue, increase injury risk, and stall progress. MAF gives you a clear, personal ceiling for your easy runs. It keeps you honest, and over time, you’ll be able to run faster at the same heart rate. That’s real progress. But always remember, these methods will never be 100% accurate, and a proper stress test will be needed if if you want accurate readings. ✅ How to use it: •Grab a heart rate monitor (chest strap is best) •Start your easy run •Keep your heart rate at or just below your MAF number •If it creeps up slow down or walk •Do this for most of your weekly mileage (especially long runs) It’s simple, it works, and i find it’s the closest method to accurate out of all the generic easy methods.

The Maffetone Method for Zone 2 running.

Step-by-Step Guide

The Maffetone Method for Zone 2 running. Step-by-Step Guide Determine Your Maximum Aerobic Heart Rate (MAHR): Use the formula: 180 - Your Age. For example, if you’re 40 years old, your MAHR would be 140 beats per minute (bpm). Maintain Your Heart Rate Below MAHR: While jogging, ensure your heart rate stays below your calculated MAHR (e.g., 140 bpm for a 40-year-old). This might be challenging initially, and you might need to walk to lower your heart rate. Adhere to the Process: Adaptation Period: Your body needs time to adapt to this new training method. Trust the process and stay consistent. Patience is Key: Endure the initial phase where you might feel slower. Over time, your pace will improve while keeping your heart rate low. Benefits: Improved Endurance: By training at a lower heart rate, you build a strong aerobic base, allowing you to run longer distances with greater ease. Enhanced Fat Burning: Running at a lower heart rate encourages your body to burn fat for fuel, which is more efficient for long-term energy. Reduced Injury Risk: This method helps prevent overtraining and reduces the risk of injuries associated with high-intensity workouts. #RunStronger #RunLonger #FatBurning #EnduranceBuilding #InjuryPrevention #TrainSmart #RunningCommunity #RunTogether #FitnessInspiration #RunMotivation #HealthyLiving #RunTips

I do ~80% of my conditioning at ~75% of my max heart rate. I trained under the “Maffetone Method” during my Ironman chapter. This allowed me to develop an aerobic engine (oxygen efficiency), and muscle endurance. Over a 4 year period my run pace dropped substantially while maintaining the same heart rate. Volume benefited me more than anything else when it came to building endurance fitness. Both run volume and bike volume.

Low heart rate running ⬇️ First, follow @thegrateful.runner for great running content 😊 Also don’t forget to 📌 SAVE this for later 📌 When I restarted running, I noticed my heart rate was always very high from the start and I felt exhausted after every run. I found out about the Maffetone method and low heart rate running. This technique has brought me back to my old pace, even faster, but with a much lower heart rate. The secret? 🤫 1️⃣ It takes a long time, at least for me, it took almost a year. It could even take longer depending on your starting conditions. 2️⃣ You have to let the ego running leave the room. There’s no surprise, the slower you go, the lower the heart rate. This method had me run 10:24/km at first with loads of walking! 3️⃣ It can take time to figure out where your actual zone 2 is situated. Standard mesures for heart rate on apps aren’t applicable to everyone! Let me know if you’ve tried this and what the results were!
