Does New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani see the Democratic Party winning back control of Congress in the midterms? "I'm hopeful," he told PBS New Hour's Amna Nawaz in a recent interview. “I think we know very well as a party what we are against. The task now is what are we for? And it's not enough to just say it, we have to actually do it.” Mamdani also spoke about translating the commitments he made on the campaign trail into concrete policies to lower the cost of living for New Yorkers, from free child care for 2-year-olds to holding bad landlords accountable. “This can be a city where New Yorkers can afford to live and where they can also afford to dream,” Mamdani told Nawaz. Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, won the Democratic Party primary last summer in what was seen as a stunning upset over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo. His general election victory later that year ensured he would become New York City's youngest mayor in more than a century.

In an interview earlier this summer, New York City's Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani reflected on his personal journey and political career, sharing insights into his ethnic and religious background and the challenges he faced. Born in Uganda to a Punjabi Hindu mother and a Gujarati Muslim father, Mamdani moved to NYC at the age of seven and grew up in Morningside Heights. He spoke candidly about the fears and prejudices faced by Muslim candidates, recalling that during his 2020 assembly campaign, some of his elders from the Indian-American community even advised him to downplay his Islamic faith due to public apprehension post-9/11. Nonetheless, Mamdani strove to build his political career without hiding his roots and identity, attaining gradual progress and traction in his political movement and gaining more and more support over time. Noting that initial support was minimal and skeptics doubted his ability to surpass even 1% of the vote share, he highlighted how, at the time of the interview, he was able to reach 22% in electoral polls, demonstrating that persistence, openness, and visibility can inspire belief and momentum among voters. Protect this man at all costs. Zohran Mamdani, the presumptive Democratic nominee for NYC mayor, said Sunday that billionaires shouldn’t exist in a country wracked by inequality. In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Mamdani, a democratic socialist, said, “I don’t think that we should have billionaires,” and doubled down on his call to raise taxes on NYC’s wealthiest residents. 
Mamdani said his platform to tax the top 1% and the most profitable corporations helped him win the primary. He proposes a 2% hike on those earning over $1 million annually. This stance has sent NYC’s elite into a panic. Billionaire hedge funder and Trump ally Bill Ackman pledged last week to bankroll an anti-Mamdani challenger, warning of “disastrous” consequences for the city’s business climate. Ackman posted that hundreds of millions are available to back a Mamdani opponent and insisted socialism has no place in NYC. Mamdani, unfazed, said he looks forward to making the city “fair for all,” billionaires included. Mamdani’s rise signals a growing appetite for bold economic reform in the face of staggering inequality.
