Here’s how to make math centers SIMPLE! 🤩👇 Hands-down the most popular time of day in first grade is Guided Math Rotations! 💗 This system is SO easy to manage! Each day after our whole group mini lesson, students visit 3 stations: 🌟 Teacher Table: For small group instruction with me where we have hands-on, guided practice on our learning objective 🌟Math Tub: Students work with a partner and complete 1 tub activity each day. We use a lot of math center routines so these activities don’t take a lot of time to introduce and students can work independently. The numbers next to the names tell students which tub to work at that day! 🌟 Independent Work: either math technology or independent work (this could be workbook pages or a math folder) When I’ve had bigger classes, I’ve also done 4 groups/4 rotations, but 3 is my favorite because it is less overwhelming! 🫶 🤩 You can read more about our Guided Math block in my blog post! As a math interventionist, I do not work in a traditional classroom! So, sometimes I have to tweak ideas to make them work for me. I have been loving what I have been reading in Building Thinking Classrooms and the first thing I want to implement is more random groupings! By changing the seating arrangement each day, students will naturally have to work with different students in our partner work. This also allows me to work with different students one on one because I will be working with whoever is seated at seat 3! Here’s the one thing I had my students do every week… About a month into the school year, I taught my students how to create their own multiplication chart. Once they got the hang of it, we made a new one at the beginning of every week. Then they had a personalized tool ready to tackle the skills we were working on for the week! One of the most common complaints I hear from teachers is, “But they don’t know their facts!” 🫠🙃 And yup…they probably don’t. But that doesn’t have to hold them back from being successful in math.
