The English tradition of crowning May Queens and Kings goes back to the middle ages: One of the earliest sources of this tradition dates to 1240, when a bishop of Worcester condemned clerics who attended “games to be made of a King and Queen.” However, it’s very possible that the practice goes back to many centuries earlier. The duties of these monarchs varied widely, but they often seemed to consist of residing over as well as designing and managing entertainment for the local area- not just during May Day, but for the summer season as a whole. These activities could include supervising religious plays, acting as masters of artillery, and organizing shows for visiting royalty.
