Rising like stone giants from the plains of Thessaly, Meteora is one of the most breathtaking and otherworldly sites in Greece. The name means “suspended in the air”, and it’s easy to see why. The story of Meteora begins millions of years ago, when massive rock pillars were formed by geological upheavals and erosion. But its true fame came much later , in the 14th century, when Orthodox monks seeking isolation and spiritual purity began to build monasteries atop these towering cliffs, hundreds of meters above the ground. Originally, access was only possible by climbing ropes, ladders, or being hoisted up in nets, a deliberate way to keep the outside world away. By the 15th and 16th centuries, Meteora became a thriving monastic community, with 24 monasteries built in total. Today, only six remain active, preserving centuries of Byzantine tradition, manuscripts, and frescoes. Welcome to Meteora ✨ Meteora is home to six still-active monasteries perched high on dramatic rock pillars 🏞️ ℹ️ Visiting info you should know: entry to each monastery costs about 5€ (kids under 12 usually free)  🕰️ Opening hours depend on monastery and season. Most open around 09:00/ 09:30 and close mid to late afternoon. Some monasteries are closed one weekday per week. So it’s smart to check ahead if you want a full experience.  👗 Dress code is required: men need long pants and sleeved shirts; women should wear skirts below the knee and shoulders covered. If needed, wraps or skirts are often available at monastery entrances.  ✅ If you want to see several monasteries without rushing, plan at least two days. 2 to 4 monasteries per day is realistic, trying all six in one day feels rushed.  🍄 The area around Meteora is known for its wild mushrooms and truffles. All you need to know when visiting the Meteora Monasteries in Greece 👇🏻 . There once were 24 monasteries built on 60 million years old rocks, 6 remain. - Grand Meteoran (must visit) - Varlaam (must visit) - Agia Varvara Rousanou - Holy Trinity - Agios Stefanos (busiest one but only one doable for people that can’t walk stairs) - Agios Nikolaos (most authentic one and 360 view) All of them (except the last one) close on ONE weekday. Also the closing time differs per monastery, so plan your visit in advance. 🤑 Cost is € 5 per person per monastery, however Greeks and children under 12 can enter for free. Це комплекс монастирів, збудованих на величезних скелях, що підносяться над Фессалійською рівниною. Назва “Метеора” перекладається як “ті, що зависли в повітрі” — і це справжня правда. Скелі висотою до 600 метрів виглядають так, ніби виросли просто з неба. Колись сюди могли дістатися лише відлюдники та ченці — за допомогою мотузок, драбин і корзин. Сьогодні — це місце паломництва, духовного пошуку і туристичного захоплення. Приїхавши сюди на один день, я відмінила всі плани в ту ж секунду, як побачила це на власні очі. Залишилась тут на три дні. Просто жити серед цих скель. З ранку до вечора — їздила машиною, зупинялась, дивилась, їла чікен сулувакі з мангалу і фету (я вже наполовину грецький салат, наполовину шашличок) Не можливо надихатись. I bet you’ve never heard of this place in Greece! 🤯 Okay maybe you have, but if you haven’t, welcome to Meteora, located in Northern Greece 🇬🇷 Between the 13th and 14th centuries, twenty-four monasteries were established atop the rocks. Access to the monasteries was originally (and deliberately) difficult, requiring either long ladders lashed together or large nets used to haul up both goods and people. This place is also home to Theopetra Cave, the oldest known example of a man-made structure! I had wanted to visit this place for five years and finally I got to see it with my own eyes last summer.
