Despite looking like Disney’s Flotsam and Jetsam, these two #eels showcase the wide color variability of the species #Gymnothorax genus of moray eels. These Gymnothorax berndti and Gymnothorax elegant were filmed by #ROVHercules while exploring the summit of #AhyiSeamount, between Maug and Uracus in the #NorthernMarianaIslands. Living together as “roommates” as the team jokes, is not uncommon for #morays, which are known to even hunt cooperatively on the reef with groupers.

I love all sea creatures, but morays are for sure one of my favourite! Despite their bad reputation among mostly new dives cos they look scary.. they just have to breath like this so it’s not sight of aggression ❤️❤️ The Fimbriated Moray Eel is Gymnothorax fimbriatus, also called the fimbriate moray, dark-spotted moray, or spot-face moray. It is a reef-associated Indo-Pacific moray that typically lives in lagoons, reef flats, harbors, and sheltered coral areas, usually from 0 to 50 m deep. It has a pale tan to grayish-brown body with irregular dark spots and partial bars, and many individuals show a yellowish head. Adults can reach about 93.4 cm total length, and the species is considered least concern by the IUCN. This moray is probably nocturnal and feeds on fishes and crustaceans. It is generally described as harmless to humans, though like most morays it can bite if threatened. Its range spans much of the Indo-Pacific, from Madagascar to the Society Islands, north to southern Japan, and south to Queensland, with records throughout Micronesia. The moray eel looks like a legit alien. And it’s got the chompers to prove it. Morays have a second set of jaws called pharyngeal jaws that let them it in an interesting (albeit freaky as hell) way. Found this guy stranded up on the rocks about 30’ from the water. Don’t know if someone caught him and left him there to die or if possibly he crawled up a bit to high during high tide but it was definitely a sad sight. We had to carefully grab this thing so he didn’t take a finger but sent him back in the water hopefully to continue doing what moray eels do best #fishing #fish #florida #viral #reels
