I can’t get over how many of you love moths! Truly am blown away 🥰 We decided to shoot in the rain, and I’m so glad we did. I was worried the moth light wouldn’t work well since Mindo was experiencing some heavy rains. That apparently didn’t stop these moths from having a safe place to go to. Some highlights from setting up the moth sheet in late June here in New England. The best part about mothing is you set the lights up, pull up a chair, maybe some beers, and just watch all the insects fly in. Here's a handful of June-July classics, drawn in with a 175 watt mercury vapor bulb, black light, and a projector screen as the sheet. I suspend the sheet so the majority of the moths rest directly on it. This method makes it super easy to take pictures of them, observe them up close, and even count them if I am surveying. Sometimes I will just lay the sheet against the ground and have the tripod hold up both lights, but this is usually only in sandy habitat or if I am traveling and do not have all my usual gear. I use a ballasted MV bulb and a blacklight that work conjuctively with each other. The mercury vapor works as a beacon to draw in moths from the entire area it is visible, and the UV bulb makes them land directly on the sheet. It's best to use these both together, and I've had the most success by far with this methodology. If you cannot get ahold of a mercury vapor bulb, the blacklight works fantastic for bringing in the big showy moths such as giant silk moths and sphinxes, and it is much more of a simple setup. Just be prepared to stay up past midnight if you want to see the Giant silk moths and sphinxes, I am usually out until 3-4am if it is turning out to be a great night. #moths #lepidoptera #mothing #entomology #newengland

Let's go moth trapping 🤩 According to my moth book, there are 18 species of hawk-moths you could well find in the UK (cue my over excitement) 🤯 However, not all will be found on the south east coast where I live & 5 of those are not native species - the * DREAM * visitor for me would be a death's head 💀 The slow mo moth that looks like it's doing a bit of disco dancing has been a pretty regular visitor to the trap this summer, the elephant hawk-moth 🕺🏻 Elephant hawk-moth sounds like a funny name for a bright pink & green moth however its caterpillar form resembles that of an elephant's trunk 🐘 So far this summer other than elephant hawk-moths, I've also caught a poplar and a lime hawk-moth.
