The proportion of the plaster mix varies from place to place. Sometimes you are lucky to find a soil which doesn’t need any additional clay or sand like we found at this build. Fermenting the mix with cow dung ensures that the plaster doesn’t dust when it dries.

Plaster is one of those traditional materials that everyone is falling back in love for its tonal, textured and natural aesthetic. With this property, as the walls are bare brick the material applied to them has to be breathable to avoid problems like damp. One of the best options that allows bricks to breath is traditional plasters such as lime or clay. The type of plaster allowed is influenced by Listed Building consent and the conservation officer. Originally, I had wanted a build up of a thermal lime plaster to be finished with a top coat of clay plaster, which has a more textured finish than lime, but this was rejected. Consent was only give for a very specific type of lime plaster which meant to we had to jump through some hoops and do testing of a custom lime plaster for the project that gave a similar finish to the clay I’d initially hoped for. Here you can see the process of the first coat of lime being applied. This is a lime which has insulation. As the walls are bare brick, there is no insulation and this product is c. four times more thermally efficient than standard lime. To start off with the plaster is mixed in containers with water and fibres added. The fibres help improve tensile strength to reduce shrinkage cracking. The lime is then applied to the walls with many areas needed dubbing out which is where the lime is added as needed to fill out uneven surfaces. Mesh is added to any areas with wood, or large cracks to help the plaster bind. Once the first coat of plaster was applied it is then given a scratch coat to key the surface. This allows for a more adhesive surface for the second layer of lime to be applied. The second coat will go on in the same way, with more focus on levelling the final surface, rounding the corners and finished with a churn brush.
