In case you didn’t already know… we welcomed a Mudi puppy into our life a month ago, named Nagi. This video was of us last night and there is just so much to unfold within it. Let me start by saying I swear this puppy is a dog trainers dream puppy. He’s fast maturing, high food drive, high handler engagement, high prey / toy drive and explodes with sweet & spicy personality. I swear he thinks he’s 2 already. With that said, he’s a high drive puppy lol which means, biting, nipping, barking, tugging, chasing, highly frustrated & extremely smart. He reminds me of a mini malinois some days and a wild lab others, but he’s such a great blend of everything I love to train. A few weeks ago, he wouldn’t bring the toy back. He wanted to waltz around with any toy and / or drop it to go right for my hands 😩 So we started changing the game: hands = food or toy. You go for the hands and the game will stop, you bring a toy to the hands and we engage in play. One thing that I learned with Tox (extreme possession) was showing them that not everytime they bring the toy back it gets touched, tugged or taken. *This is a big deal* What it shows them is that you are a safe place. A place that will engage with the toy when it’s initiated and not a threat of it being quickly taken immediately when the puppy brings it back. What I’m doing is showing him he can be loved on, played with or challenged - and it all remain enjoyable and him remaining biting the toy. Physical touch doesn’t mean let go. It’s finally warm enough to bathe my dogs outside! 💦🫧 Niffler my Mudi puppy loves to play and is always getting dirty, so first on my weekend to do list was to give him a bath! 🛁 One think I love about him, is his love for water. Since I got Lana, I've been often asked, "What do you plan to do with her? Agility, right?" But Lana is like any other of my dogs, just smaller. She is a herding breed, with a lot of drive and able to do almost anything (well, maybe minus the 1m jump and 2kg dumbbell 😆). I feel like obedience benefits can be overlooked when it comes to small(er) dogs. I can see how much it helps her gain impulse control, understand reward, learn focus, and inner motivation. For a sensitive, quick to act dog, this is extremely beneficial.
