Sometimes you are following a tornado very close as a storm chaser, and everything is lining up for that rare but intense close intercept, and the tornado just peaces out. Not that I have experience of this or anything. No, not at all. This intense vortex breakdown like this is really wild to see in person. It's like you are chasing a monster, and it just disappears back to whatever evil dimension it entered from.

When a tornado goes multivortex, it's a different animal entirely. You're not watching one circulation anymore. You're watching several, spinning inside the larger rotation, each one carving its own path of destruction within the whole. It's chaotic and organized at the same time, which shouldn't make sense but does when you're standing there watching it happen. This was near Eldorado, Oklahoma, and it was one of those tornadoes where you stop thinking about photography and start thinking about physics. The sheer violence of what's happening inside that area underneath the churning base is hard to process in real time. You just film, keep your distance, and try to comprehend what you're looking at later. I've watched this footage back more times than I'd admit. It doesn't get less intense.

This tornado formed from a storm that formed and sat along a boundary intersection for over an hour. The enhanced wind field created by this highly deviant motion + the added surface vorticity near the boundaries, made this tornado possible in what was otherwise a very marginal environment. A lot of tornadoes happen because of 'happy little accidents' locally.
