We were not born with 2500 personalities. We were built over time. Every new threat, every new rule, every new way to get through the day, the brain adapted. A part stepped forward to hold something, manage something, protect something. And that is why we do not simply get rid of them. These parts formed for a reason. So healing is usually not about erasing anyone. With our dissociative identity I don't always know who is fronting with me or who is out. We are polyfragmented and we have thousands of thousands of folks inside the make up recognizable groups that are ordered in a complex way. I can often tell by how they talk or the body language, how they're making me feel, or what they're telling me inside that they're a kid or an adult, a Tough Guy, a Mother part, a healer, a therapist, a wise part, a traumatized part, but I might not know the individual subgroup and some times I can't even tell closer than that, and that's okay. We have functional multiplicity where we work together on our choices and what we're doing and that works well for us. But it will be different for other folks living with dissociative identity; they get to decide what works best for them. #ramcoasystem #plural #multiplicity #dissociativeidentitydisorder

LAUGHING AND CRYING AT THE SAME TIME I've had the most challenging week. I was worn out physically, drained emotionally, spread too thin, and my soul was in hiding, beyond reach, unresponsive. But I just wrote a thinkpiece, "Are you happy? Or sad? Or both" and I realize there is nothing more exhausting than a rollercoaster ride in your head. It's not going up and then down, it's going up and down at the same time, like smiling through a heartache, or dancing to your heart's content while broken pieces of your heart are hurled to the floor with every sway or turn or jump. It's true that the heart can hold space for opposing emotions, and the challenge is to recognize which emotion deserves the space more at any given moment, like you need to decide whether to hold on or to let go, whether to sulk or to carry on, to fall or to rise, to fight or to give up. There is a time for everything but then everything sometimes happens at the same time. Life isn't like the movies, or at least it isn't for some of us, who still have to brush our teeth, wash our hair, file the paperwork, lock the doors at night when we feel like just throwing it all away, when everything seems pointless. Shit happens, but some of us never forget to flush. I wonder if there are people who are 100 percent happy at any given moment in a world like ours where one out of four children is suffering from a chronic disease, such as my nephew of still unestablished debilitating condition once misdiagnosed as epilepsy, where the rate of extinction is 30,000 species a year, where, according to the Geneva Academy, there are 110 armed conflicts ATM, where the rate of global warming is currently three times faster than it was in the decades before 1982... Ah, but sometimes, many times I catch myself happy and then something reminds me I shouldn't be, or the other way around. #duality #multiplicity
