Meet the pet therapy dogs of CHKD’s Buddy Brigade! 🐾❤️   For 20 years, these friendly volunteers have spread joy and comfort throughout the CHKD Health System. What began in 2005 with just seven dogs visiting inpatients at our main hospital has grown into a pawsitively impactful program!   Today, our Buddy Brigade includes 41 trained therapy dogs who, alongside their handlers, make special visits to our main hospital, Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, Children’s Pavilion, and our Child Advocacy Centers in Norfolk and Oyster Point. Last year alone, these furry friends shared more than 12,300 meaningful moments with our patients, families, and staff.   To celebrate our amazing Buddy Brigade, we’re kicking off a superlative contest on Aug. 4-15! You are the greatest loss of my life. My heart can’t comprehend a world where you’re no longer here. I never believed in soulmates until I met you. I didn’t know that a single being could hold my entire heart, could redefine everything I thought I knew about love, until you jumped into my life and showed me what unconditional truly meant. You turned gray early because we all loved you so much that we kissed the color right off of you. Your paws especially white since I fell asleep holding them every night. You were brilliant. I know you understood every word we spoke. You loved everyone you met and your heart stretched far beyond the boundaries of your body. You were an amazing therapy dog to both children and the elderly whose presence healed so many residents. No one can ever fill the space you’ve left behind. The day you left, something inside me left too. Our souls are woven together, and now there’s a tear in the fabric of who I am. This wasn’t supposed to happen. You were supposed to stay. You were supposed to make it through this and be okay. We did everything that we could do to save you but your body failed you. You fought so hard, each day, and I believe you did it since you knew I wasn’t ready to lose you and how much I still needed you. I can’t fathom that this is reality, I still feel like I’m waiting for you to return to me. A reality without you is a reality I don’t understand. I still talk to you, still reach for your velvet ears, still expect to feel you at my side and my heartbreaks all over again when I realize you are gone. Michael is going to be very hard to place in a home. He's incredibly sweet, loves everyone, and is incredibly cuddly. He also struggles with regulating his drive. He is difficult to interrupt during those moments and it's going to make him difficult to adopt. He's such a special dog but he needs someone willing to put in the work to bring them into their home. After 3 million views he has only one potential placement. He could be a working dog, or a therapy dog, or an emotional support dog if he was just given a chance to do the work.
