Here are some of Danny’s memories from this shoot when he was interviewed by Billboard magazine in 2014 for Illmatic’s 20th anniversary. “Nas was a poet. He was wise beyond his years. At the time, hip-hop was about representing where you were from and telling stories of how you grew up and became you. And, that’s what he did. That’s what made Illmatic’ so special. I captured him looking back at me guiding me (pic 5). He took me for a walk around his neighborhood, and I shot some [photos] of him from the back. Behind him (pic 7) was the building that he grew up in which is why we chose to shoot him in front of it. I thought it’d be cool to have him standing to see the entire outfit he was wearing. I wanted a range of options so I shot him sitting down as well.” - Danny Clinch Having captured some of these images years ago, I felt obligated to go back recently and redo them better (as well as capturing video). Released in 1999 as the lead single from “I Am…”, “Nas Is Like” paired Nas with DJ Premier for one of the most respected Nas x Preemo collaborations. The track is often pointed to as a strong example of Nas at his most technically focused, while Premier's production gave it that distinctive feel that became a big part of the song's identity. 👀 One of the most interesting details behind the song is the beat itself. For years, the main sample behind “Nas Is Like” was considered one of the more hard-to-identify samples in hip-hop, before it was later traced to “What Child Is This?” by John V. Rydgren and Bob R. Way. Premier also explained that he found the sample on a record he had nearly thrown away, then rebuilt it into the final instrumental. The song also built a strong legacy beyond its original release.
