3 Tips for getting a NASA internship *as a pre-med/medical student*   1.        Apply. Apply. Apply: In my first cycle applying, I applied to over 100 internships at many of the major NASA sites all over the country. If you have a summer break or can graduate early, match the internship with your schedule. I know many interns who postponed graduation by a year to complete 3 internship tours at NASA. Pro Tip: Human Health and Performance Research takes place at Johnson Space Center.   2.        Focus on your skills and discipline: Apply to internships that correlate to your major during undergraduate training (even if you have already graduated). You don’t even need a STEM major for some of the internships offered. As a medical student, I focused on applying to internships in the “health professionals and related programs” but also sent applications to biology-focused programs since I majored in Cell and Molecular Biology during undergrad. Another example is applying to work in the NASA Neuroscience Laboratory if you majored/majoring in neuroscience. There is an internship offered for nearly every discipline out there.     3.        Meet basic requirements: Have a cumulative 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale). Be a full-time student (high school through graduate-level). Be a minimum of 16 years of age at the time of application (no exceptions). Undergraduate and graduate students must be enrolled full-time in a degree-granting program at an accredited college or university. I coordinated with my medical school and the internship coordinator to move my internship to align with my summer break, so try to be flexible with your schedule.   4.        Bonus: if you are a 4th year medical student, physician or pharmacy student, you are able to apply to the “NASA Aerospace Medicine Clerkship,” which takes place in October and April of every year. 5 NASA Internships for Medical Students This list is something I wish I knew before cold emailing and applying to hundreds of internships. Contrary to my original path, don’t apply to work at NASA “just to work for NASA.” You really do have to have an interest in Aerospace Medicine (AM). What does that mean? Read a few pages of “Principles of Clinical Medicine for Space Flight” by Dr. Michael Barratt to familiarize yourself with this niche realm of medicine before diving in. With that being said, you do not have to be pursing AM to intern in one of the NASA labs - there are opportunities in the bone lab, neuroscience lab, cardiovascular and vision, and many more. However, Aerospace Medicine is a large component for the clerkships, so set yourself up by getting involved as much as possible with the Aerospace Medicine Association (AsMA).
