Since it’s winter time here I wanted to highlight some of the research that’s been done over the past year. This first study I want to highlight is by @bee.babette_performer This paper contains a cool survey asking people about native bees in Australia. I particularly was interested in the question that was asked “what is your favorite Australian bee species” the vast majority of respondent in this survey said the blue banded Bee was their favorite bee. While there’s lots of other things we could talk about from this study, this question made me think, I wonder what people’s favorite bee is in North America. So that’s my question to you all, what is your favorite North American bee species? I know several of you that follow this page aren’t in North America so we can ask the question more broadly, What is your favorite local Bee species?

Getting to know our Aussie native bees 🐝 We’re flipping through the just released Native Bees of Australia by Bernard Jacobi — an incredible guide to Australia’s bee families, nesting habits and lifecycles. Did you know Australia has over 1,700 species of native bees? This book makes it so much easier to understand who’s who — from ground-nesting bees to cavity-nesters — and what they need to survive. Beautiful photos. Practical knowledge. Real appreciation for the tiny pollinators around us. Understanding bees = better habitat, better planting, better outcomes for biodiversity 💚 #walovesnature #biodiversity #nativebees #nativebeesofaustralia #beebooks

Our hive is home to Tetragonula carbonaria, a stingless native bee found along Australia’s east coast. Native bees are essential pollinators. By moving pollen between flowers, they support fruit and seed production, strengthen biodiversity, and sustain the health of local ecosystems. Many Australian plants rely on native pollinators to reproduce effectively. Supporting them can be simple:
– Plant local native flowering species
– Avoid pesticides
– Leave small areas undisturbed
– Provide shallow water Small actions in our gardens contribute to broader ecological resilience. Do you know which native bee species live in your area? #nativebees #environmentaleducation #biophilia

Did you know bees could be SO TINY?!? 🤯 This is Euryglossina (Microdontura) mellea, a species not even realised to be in WA until 2014, thought to be rare, but since my research, I’ve established it’s super common - just very under-recognised! It’s one of over 80 species to forage on Corymbia calophylla (my vote for Eucalypt of the Year) 💚 Want to learn more? This week in my Year 4 bee incursion we’ve been buzzing with excitement as we explored the incredible world of bees Our young entomologists learned about: Native Stingless Bees – Australia’s tiny, gentle pollinators like the Tetragonula carbonaria. They also got to meet our beautiful Austroplebeia australis natives stingless bee observation hive. We discovered how they live in complex colonies, don’t sting, and produce small amounts of beautifully tangy honey. Solitary Bees – such as the hardworking Blue-banded Bee. Unlike honey bees, these bees don’t live in hives. Each female builds and provisions her own nest. To support them, our students designed and built their very own bee hotels to create safe nesting spaces in our school garden. Honey Bees We examined how they work together in large colonies, pollinate our food crops, build perfect hexagonal honeycomb, and communicate through movement. The highlight? Tasting real honeycomb and seeing those amazing wax cells up close! Hands-on learning + sustainability + a little honey tasting = a sweet success! We’re so proud of our Year 4 students for learning how to protect and support our vital pollinators. #stemeducation #Sustainability #Year4 #BeeHotel #handsonlearning

🦘 Australia is home to nearly 2,000 species of native bees, most of which are solitary, stingless, and often overlooked. While European honey bees are everywhere, native bees play a vital role in pollinating our unique plants and keeping ecosystems healthy 🌿🌼 Seeing native bees in urban spaces is a reminder of why planting natives and protecting habitat really matters 💛 #NativeBees #PollinateAU #nature

Thank you so much to @logancity.council for inviting us to the Logan West library on Saturday to educate all things pollinators. We rolled seed balls, we examined bees, we made bee and insect hotels and we tasted delicious honey direct from the frame. We can’t wait to do it again!
