Pollinator hotels support native bees 🌱🌎🐝🌸 We drill these hotels to the specifications for leaf cutter, mason and carpenter bees. The holes have to be really smooth or the bees won’t enter. They won’t risk damaging their wings. Blue-banded bees (Amegilla)are some of the most fascinating native pollinators, not just for their striking electric-blue stripes, but for the way they build their homes. Unlike honeybees, which live in large colonies, blue-banded bees are solitary. Each female is an independent builder, forager, and mother and her nesting strategy is a small marvel of natural engineering. One of their preferred nesting materials is clay-rich sand or compacted soil. If you’ve ever noticed small holes in a vertical bank, a mud wall, or even between bricks in an old structure, you may have already seen the entrance to a blue-banded bee nest. These bees are drawn to substrates that are firm enough to hold their shape but soft enough to excavate, clay/sand is perfect. Using her mandibles and legs, the female bee carefully digs a narrow tunnel into the clay.
