I spotted this population of Drosera capillaris, Pink Sundew, in a recently burned wet prairie, and upon closer inspection noticed the remains of a Zebra Swallowtail butterfly, as well as a ensnared dragonfly that was still alive. Mums are an incredibly popular fall decoration, but they offer little support to North American wildlife. Since they’ve been cultivated for their showy double blooms, they produce little pollen or nectar. Also, as non-native plants, they did not co-evolve with our local ecosystems and do not serve as a host plant for our native butterflies and moths. Instead, consider planting native asters from the Symphyotrichum and Eurybia genera. These keystone species are powerhouse plants, serving as a host for dozens of butterfly and moth caterpillars and providing vital nectar for countless pollinators, including specialist bees. Be sure to select a species native to your specific region. Native asters deliver the same fall color as mums, and they return reliably year after year.
