Treasurer Jim Chalmers has flagged that there'll be more "savings" to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) as the government seeks to curb growth from about 10% to about 5%. NDIS Minister Mark Butler is due to address the National Press Club later this week. Mr Chalmers says he'll "provide more than the usual amount of detail" about the plan. The NDIS is NOT funding “coffee and haircuts.” It’s funding support workers so people with disabilities can leave the house, connect with others, and live with dignity. But headlines like that? They spread fast. And they shape how people think. Leading to policy changes and ultimately funding cuts. But without these supports, people don’t just “miss out”, they become isolated, families burn out, and pressure shifts onto hospitals and crisis services which are already at breaking point. This isn’t about luxury. It’s about access to an everyday meaningful life and if that makes you uncomfortable, maybe ask yourself why. Because when we strip away the headlines, this debate is about whether people deserve a life beyond survival. Whether allowing people with disabilities to have a place in our communities is a 'worthwhile' investment. And that shouldn’t be controversial.

I get so many people spreading misinformation or misconceptions about the NDIS in my comments, so let's go over the basics of the scheme. And no, I am not on the NDIS myself. That means that no, the NDIS did not pay for my tattoos or musical instruments or whatever other thing you think a disabled person like me shouldn't have access to.

Labor just announced plans to slightly reduce NDIS spending from $55 billion next year to $52 billion. There’s no actual cut - they plan to do this by reducing the scheme’s growth from 10% to 2%. Senator Fatima Payman posted a video claiming that this will result in the mass killing of disabled people. Realistically the current plan is the one that puts disabled people most at risk because the failed market system continues to allow organised crime gangs to infiltrate the NDIS and threaten participants. So this ‘’reform package’’ is like trying to throw a tea spoon of water on a bush fire.

Large-scale changes to the NDIS are imminent, as the Federal Health Minister - speaking in front of the National Press Club - reveals the scheme is rapidly becoming unsustainable. Minister Mark Butler has revealed that eligibility to the scheme will be overhauled, which will see 160,000 fewer participants within four years. It’s understood people with lower support needs will be redirected to other programs outside of the NDIS. The Government also plans to tackle “fraudsters” benefiting from the scheme, announcing plans to make 90% of all payments from the NDIS to go to registered providers only. In the Sunday paper this week: How do we reign in NDIS spending?! The article has several suggestions including moving mild cases of autism to a new “thriving kids” school based program (pulling money out of one pocket and putting it into another for the political gain of saying you’ve cut NDIS Spending) And “ditching the diagnosis” making funds allocated based on ACTUAL level of need, not the title of having “autism” whatever that means these days. NONE of the article addresses the root of the problem: Research into and promotion of awareness of casual factors contributing to autism. The argument of “better awareness” becomes counter productive when you shell out taxpayer funds to anyone who has an autism diagnosis, and the ones on the deep end, like poor Finley mentioned here, who have co-morbidities of autism that ACTUALLY require significant funding get their plans cut to make room for more and more kids with “autism” to join the scheme.
