This is not an attack on Jeff. Jeff Nippard often says incline bench biases the upper chest with a wide grip and flared elbows. The problem is that position doesn’t really line up with what the clavicular head of the pec is actually responsible for. The upper pec contributes strongly to SHOULDER FLEXION and HORIZONTAL ADDUCTION. If you remove the adduction component and flare the elbows out wide, the movement shifts more toward the anterior deltoid and away from the pec’s ability to produce force through its line of action. That doesn’t mean the upper pec isn’t working at all. Multiple muscles contribute during shoulder flexion, which is exactly what the figure in this post shows. But if the goal is to bias the clavicular fibers, the arm path should allow both flexion and adduction under load, not just elevation with the elbows flared. Another thing that doesn’t add up is the reliance on EMG activation to justify the setup. Jeff himself has said EMG doesn’t necessarily predict hypertrophy, yet the prescription often comes from activation data alone. More activation doesn’t automatically mean more growth. What matters is loading the muscle through the mechanics it’s responsible for while producing high mechanical tension. This isn’t an attack on Jeff. I respect the platform he’s built and the amount of people he’s gotten interested in training. He’s helped a lot of people start learning about lifting. I just think some of the conclusions he presents are often late to the literature or simplified in ways that don’t always hold up biomechanically, and people sometimes take them as absolute. ( I mean cmon, he’s arching his back during an incline press 🥱 ) Also, sincere condolences to him and his family. Losing someone close is incredibly difficult. Very sorry.
