🏳️‍🌈✨ How to use ze/zir pronouns ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you haven’t heard of these pronouns before, keep reading to learn more! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ze/zir pronouns are neopronouns — aka new pronouns — that people of any gender can use in order to express their identities and be referred to with affirming and validating language. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There are a few different spellings and pronunciations of ze/zir pronouns — and I’ll be talking about more variations in the future. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But in today’s case — “Ze” is pronounced like “zee” (with a long E sound; rhyming with “she”) and “zir” is pronounced like “here” but with a Z at the beginning instead of an H. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Let’s practice with an example sentence — ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If I were talking about someone who uses ze/zir pronouns, I might say… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Ze is so fun to hang out with. I only met zir recently, but zir energy is radiant, and I know ze going to be a great friend.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Whereas, if I were referring to someone who uses she/her pronouns, the sentence would read — ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “She is so fun to hang out with. The term non-binary exists to describe identity, not grammar. It is about how a person experiences themselves, not how a language categorizes nouns. In Italian, words are grammatically gendered. Pasta, table, chair, sky. None of these are identities. They are linguistic structures inherited over centuries. Treating grammatical gender as equivalent to human gender collapses two completely different systems into one joke. That’s where the logic breaks. Non-binary language is meant to reduce forced classification of people. Turning it into a punchline about pasta does the opposite. It reframes identity as a linguistic inconvenience rather than a lived reality. The joke works because it sounds clever. It fails because it misunderstands the premise.
