Dark-eyed Juncos vary geographically. There are two widespread forms: the “slate-colored” junco of the eastern United States and most of Canada, which is smooth gray above; and the “Oregon” junco, found across much of the western U.S., with a dark hood, warm brown back and rufous flanks. Our junco is the slate-colored variant; adult males (like the one shown here) have a dark gray head, throat and breast, contrasting with a snow-white belly. #junco #darkeyedjunco #sparrows #Adirondacks #AdirondackBirds

I strive to make a point, even as I Am rushing around “getting shit done” to slow down and notice my surroundings. The birds & animals, plants, trees and bushes, the weather… This little being has been getting my attention today as I clean our house. I so wonder what happened to this Oregon Junco. Is it an injury? Were they attacked and survived? What’s the story here? Would they survive without our bird feeder? How long will they be here? How do the other birds support this Junco? Do they compete less? Will this Junco mate and raise young? What questions come to your mind? What thoughts or feelings does this bring up for you? Who / what are you noticing around your home and places your visit?

Dark eyed juncos are one of my favorite winter visitors. They are often found foraging for seeds and insects on the ground, using their feet and beaks to uncover food hidden in the dirt. Despite their small size, these birds are hardy and able to withstand cold temperatures and harsh weather.

Snow Birds ❄️⬇️ The Dark-Eyed Junco shows up just as the snow starts to fall. These ground feeders will love you if you leave some cracked corn on the ground or on a low down platform feeder. Happy Mother’s Day! Found this little Oregon Junco nest with 5 eggs while trying to take down last year’s dead hanging planters. Decided to keep it up and put a nest cam on it and watch Mom hard at work trying to incubate and feed herself throughout the day and night. Dad showed up for about 10 seconds. This is what mom’s do. Thank you to all mother’s out there, we wouldn’t be alive without you!

Nettle’s Big Snackventure 🌿 Nettle loves to munch as she walks, so a member of the zoo’s horticulture team came along on this adventure to make sure everything was safe to nibble.
