Project Orion wasn’t your regular rocket idea 🚀 instead of burning fuel, it planned to use nuclear bombs for thrust. How? A giant metal plate would sit at the back of the spacecraft. Small nuclear explosions would be set off behind it, each blast pushing the plate forward and propelling the rocket into space. This method, called nuclear pulse propulsion, could theoretically reach Mars in weeks and even travel to other stars within a human lifetime. Two years ago today, @NASA unveiled the #Artemis I rocket at @NASAKennedy Space Center for the very first time. Carried atop the crawler-transporter 2, the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft ventured to the launch pad for a wet dress rehearsal ahead of the uncrewed @NASAArtemis I launch. Rolling out of the Vehicle Assembly Building, it made a 4.2-mile journey to Launch Complex 39B on March 17, 2022. It later launched on November 16, 2022, at 1:47am EST.
