We’re excited to share that artist Lizania Cruz has been named MoMA’s 2026 Adobe Creative Resident! Lizania Cruz is a Dominican participatory artist and designer interested in how systemic issues, mythmaking, historiography, and language shape our understanding of otherness and belonging. As part of her residency at MoMA, Cruz has proposed a research-based site-specific project that documents the relationships of interdependency between humans and nature and the effects of an expanding tropic globally. The Adobe Creative Residency at MoMA awards a yearlong, sponsored residency to a New York City–based artist with a demonstrated commitment to engaging communities as part of their practice, and concludes with a presentation at the Museum. I got so much out of my conversation with Kathryn Harlan and am still thinking about the ways language can impact the way we see ourselves. If you haven’t yet read, I highly recommend Fruiting Bodies — which explores this sense of otherness so beautifully.

After 19 years learning Hindi I wish I would have known… No matter how well you learn the language people will still treat you like a foreigner. You will be asked the same questions every day by people in the street. There is a fascination and “otherness” towards white foreigners that will never wear off. You can do your best to fit in, but you have to accept that people will always see you as an outsider. Do you find this to be true?
