When Owen was in 3rd grade, he received a certificate for his artwork. One of 20 students chosen… out of 500 in his entire school. And I cried. Because years before that moment, when we first got his diagnosis, I didn’t know what his future would look like. I didn’t know what doors would open for him… or which ones wouldn’t. Did he follow the art assignment the “right” way? No. He didn’t. But his teacher didn’t see a child who “missed the directions.” She chose to see the assignment through his eyes. She saw his coloring. She saw his shadowing. She saw the way his mind translated the world onto paper. And she said it was worthy to be displayed. Out of 500 kids. Watching his sisters and brother look at him like he hung the moon… hearing them brag about their big brother… watching them run to see his artwork on display — that healed something inside of me. Because there was a time I quietly mourned the future I thought he would have. The jerseys. The typical milestones. The version of life I had planned in my head. Maybe I won’t see his name on the back of a soccer jersey. But I believe one day I will see his name next to a piece of artwork hanging in a gallery somewhere in this world. And I’ll remember that the boy who didn’t follow the assignment… was simply creating his own path. To the parents who are still trying to figure out their child’s path — don’t lose hope. Please don’t. Celebrate the small wins. Hold onto the quiet victories. They matter more than you know. It may not look like the dream we once imagined — and that’s okay.
