The painting I’m working on right now is in its frustrating stage. So here’s a little process video from a few years ago.

Most controversial is painting a dark wash over thicker light areas. Common wisdom suggests the opposite but what is the role of the artist if not to break the rules? I mix a lot of Gamsol with a dark color to make a sort of glaze. Applied with a big brush it’s a great way to remove detail or just reset an area that is feeling unresolved. Thick light dragged over dried paint, otherwise known as scumbling. This technique is a way to lighten, blend and build up texture. Since only some of the paint sticks scumbling is a shortcut to dappled highlights. Thick paint over thick paint. If you do this in the light areas while keeping your dark areas relatively thin it can add to the illusion of volume. *Disclaimer, I didn’t actually go to art school but I did discover these approaches through many years of painting. #oilpainting #oilpaintingtechniques #howtopaint

5 painting tips I wish I knew sooner as an artist! 1. Use Frog Tape instead of Blue Painters Tape. Different tapes have different levels of adhesion, and green frog tape claims to be one of the strongest. Always helps to paint a matte medium layer after laying the tape down, before color! 2. Always do an underpainting! It can be any color you’d like. This way, no bits of white show through your canvas. 3. If you’re going to use paint markers, PRIME your canvas! This will make sure the markers don’t “skip.” You want the surface to be as smooth as possible for the paint markers, and priming will help. 4. If you’re using acrylics, try a slow drying medium! This will give you more time to work with your paints on the canvas and slow drying time. 5. If you’re painting acrylic gradients, buy a spray bottle and fill it with water! On the mist setting, gently wet your canvas to increase smoother blending.

How to what now? Under painting - righto! I made a wash of two colour mixes - one a pinkish orange with a medium yellow base, and the other a purple blue. Both colours had magenta as their secondary colour and so when they blended together on the canvas they didn’t go muddy! I didn’t tone the canvas because I wanted a clear white shining through the bright yellow area of the clouds. I created a very lean wash with solvent and oil paint to get the pigments onto the canvas quickly and transparently. Any questions? So that was fun. #fulltimeartist #wildlifeart #realisticpainting #wildlifeartist #oil_painting #traditionalpainting #underpainting #cloudscapes

This one felt like painting my deepest dreams, like something deep inside coming to fruition. This was for a commission and I hope you enjoy the process! #artprocess #oilpainting #paintingprocess #haleygrecoartwork

When painting the mouth, I follow the direction of life moving upward. Warm reds, soft shadows, and small highlights gather and rise through the lips, creating a quiet current of movement. A mouth holds more than structure. It carries breath, emotion, and the words not yet spoken. Some people cannot hide their feelings tightly. Joy appears on their face. Sadness does too. Even when nothing is said, something always escapes. . #oilpainting #figurativeart #paintingprocess

Here’s how I prepare my canvas before starting any custom painting⬇️ start by applying a few coats of gesso or white acrylic to prep the canvas so the surface is smooth and the paint holds better. Then I add a slightly toned base using warm shades (burnt sienna + a hint of orange) instead of leaving it plain white…it helps the colors look richer later on. Finally, I sketch everything out before getting into the details. This is just the beginning of this commission . The secret is that it’s the technique I enjoy the most! I don’t feel overwhelmed and it really makes the painting process so much more enjoyable and not overwhelming. Mixing the underpainting with the burnt sienna in the early stages creates a glow I can’t achieve in consequent layers and keeping it loose with the wipe out technique give me confidence in each layer without overworking the paint or overwhelming the process.
