Stop giving your power away to a two-year-old. Dr. Becky Kennedy breaks down the difference between requests and boundaries that most parents miss.⁣ ⁣ A request: "Please don't press all the elevator buttons."⁣ A boundary: "I'm standing between you and the buttons because I won't let you press them."⁣ ⁣ Boundaries tell someone what YOU will do and require nothing from them. Requests hand over all your power.⁣ ⁣ When you threaten consequences you're undermining your authority. You're making success depend on your kid's cooperation.⁣ ⁣ Real boundaries require follow-through. Stand between your kid and the buttons. Block access. Hold firm when they get upset.⁣ ⁣ This isn't just parenting - it's leadership psychology. How often do you make requests disguised as boundaries at work?⁣ ⁣ The framework: Boundaries = what you control. Requests = what you hope others will do.⁣ ⁣ Master this distinction and watch your effectiveness skyrocket.

With teens, disconnection turns everything into a fight. Speaker: Dr. Becky Kennedy @drbeckyatgoodinside Source: Dr. Becky Kennedy: The 5 Parenting Mistakes You Never Want To Make | Mighty Pursuit Podcast @mightypursuit Curfew becomes a battle. Homework becomes a battle. Phones become a battle. As Dr. Becky explains, when connection is missing, every transition feels like a power struggle. We often try to solve each argument with more force. That only increases disconnection. The core issue is rarely the curfew itself. It is whether your teen feels understood and seen. Connection does not mean saying yes. It means staying connected while holding authority. When the relationship is strong, the battles lose fuel. Where might the real issue be connection, not compliance?

Boundaries are connection. So is validation. Speaker: Dr. Becky Kennedy @drbeckyatgoodinside Source: Dr. Becky Kennedy: The 5 Parenting Mistakes You Never Want To Make | Mighty Pursuit Podcast @mightypursuit Most of us were taught that boundaries create distance. But kids don’t feel safe when adults hesitate. They feel safe when someone steady is in charge. A clear limit says, “I’ve got this.” Validation says, “And I see you.” When you hold a boundary and your child protests, that’s not disconnection. That’s a nervous system reacting to not getting what it wants. Your job isn’t to remove the protest. It’s to stay regulated inside it. Authority without aggression. Empathy without surrender. That’s secure leadership. Which one feels harder for you - holding the limit or staying warm when they’re upset? #connectedparenting #boundaries #emotionregulation #parentingeducation

Kids don’t need fewer feelings. They need more skills. Speaker: Dr. Becky Kennedy @drbeckyatgoodinside Source: Dr. Becky Kennedy: The 5 Parenting Mistakes You Never Want To Make | Mighty Pursuit Podcast @mightypursuit Kids can’t get rid of their feelings. So when they believe certain emotions are wrong - anger, frustration, jealousy - those feelings don’t disappear. They come out in behavior. As Dr. Becky explains, the work isn’t to eliminate feelings or punish behavior. It’s to: • understand what’s underneath • contain the moment • and teach the skill that was missing once emotions settle That’s how kids learn to manage feelings instead of being overwhelmed by them. What feeling might your child be struggling to manage?

Resilience over happiness. That's the parenting philosophy that builds strong adults.⁣ ⁣ Dr. Becky Kennedy breaks down why optimizing for kids' moment-to-moment happiness actually wires them for anxiety. When we rush to eliminate every discomfort, we rob children of learning their own capability.⁣ ⁣ The irony? Happiness in adulthood comes from our ability to handle disappointment, jealousy, and frustration. Not from avoiding them.⁣ ⁣ Kids need to learn: "What range of experiences can I cope with?" Not: "How quickly can I return to comfort?"⁣ ⁣ This applies beyond parenting too. In work, relationships, life - resilience beats comfort every time.

High-performing professionals excel at learning and growth at work, but somehow forget to apply that same mindset to parenting. Dr. Becky Kennedy drops a game-changing insight: treat parenting like any other skill you can develop.⁣ ⁣ Her 360° performance review question for kids: "If I could do one thing different this week to be a better parent to you, what would it be?"⁣ ⁣ Expect honest feedback (maybe less phone time). The key isn't agreeing to everything, but listening and showing you value their perspective.⁣ ⁣ Just like at work, you can learn, grow, and improve as a parent. It's not supposed to feel natural—it's a skill set worth developing.

From 2010, with 5 kids under 5 "I didn't write this book because mothering little ones is easy for me. I wrote it because it isn't." This is a small collection of thoughts on mothering young children—for when you are motivated, for when you are discouraged, for the times when discipline seems fruitless, and for when you are just plain old tired. Go to lovingthelittleyears.com to get a seat for Rachel's webinar coming in March. Hands up if drop off is a challenge at the moment? I know how hard it can be. As a parent you just worry all day. It’s so hard to see our kids struggle. I think one of the best things we can do is find creative and ideally child lead ways to increase a sense of connection and safety. Sometimes this is a favourite toy sometimes it’s something that connects your child to you. Other times it’s speaking to the school about a way to increase a sense of safety or connection while you and your child are separated. it can feel so overwhelming when we’re stuck in the huge emotions. But when we step it out and put supports in place often things start to improve, especially with our younger kids who are just starting out. Thinking of everyone in the thick of it right now. ❤️ it’s not easy and you’ve got this. Thanks so much to @davidcampbell73 and @belinda.russell for this brilliant chat.
