It’s honestly frustrating when our toddler doesn’t listen — or just answers everything with “no,” right? 😩

When a child hits you and you freeze and say nothing, you’re not modeling calm. You’re installing consequence-free behavior. Children aren’t born understanding limits. They’re conditioned into them. What you don’t address today becomes the behavior you’re managing tomorrow. Here’s what to do: The moment they hit, stop everything. Turn to them. Look them in the eye. “We don’t hit.” Firm. Immediate. Done. No negotiation. No explanation. No processing together. Then shift them out of your space. Not in anger, but the body communicates what the words said. Correction is not conversation. It’s a signal. And the signal has to be clear. The child does not develop discipline on their own. The parent installs it.
