In honor of Earth Day (April 22), I reached for my scrap bins to create a pouch entirely from leftover pieces from other projects. It was so fun to see these colorful fabrics again and remember the projects I previously made with them. I used my favorite method for piecing small, patchwork pieces (if you've been around awhile, you've seen me do this before). By adhering the squares to fusible interfacing (Pellon SF101) then sewing seams for the rows and columns, it speeds up the process AND you end up with perfect points. Every. Spoiler Alert: You can easily get the look of patchwork quilting without the headache of matching up your seams!! I’m going to show you how! Lay your squares out in even rows onto lightweight, fusible interfacing. Press with a hot iron. Then fold your first row RST and sew using a 1/4” seam allowance. Press all seams to go the same direction. Then snip to the seam at each intersection but do not snip into your sewing! Fold your other rows of squares RST and sew! Four years of annual patchwork projects have come and gone, and I’m already looking forward to year 5 (especially since this might be the first community patchwork project)!

I need help picking fabrics…and I know you all have opinions! 😜 I’m about to start cutting for my next quilt pattern (I’m sooooo excited about this one!) and I can’t decide on which background…solid ivory or a speckled ivory? AND which accent color? Dot chambray or rainbow chambray? I’m not good with making decisions and because of that, allllll of those little florals are probably going to make their way into the quilt. The more the merrier, right?! I’m already getting all the feels from the vintage vibe this version of the pattern has! 120 squares individually sewn together, 4 handmade bows and a whole lot of love and patience later and I present to you the most glorious patchwork skirt to ever exist 🥲

The easy way to do perfect patchwork! 1. Start with a big piece of fusible interfacing (I like Pellon SF101). 2. Place squares on the fusible side. 3. Iron to fuse the squares to the interfacing. 4. Fold down one row and sew a 1/4" seam. 5. Repeat for the remaining rows. 6. Make a small snip at the intersection of the seam and each column (be careful to not cut into the thread from the seam!) 7. Iron seams in alternating directions to allow seams to nest. 8. Fold down the first column. Sew with a 1/4" seam. 9. Repeat until all columns are sewn. 10. Press in one direction. The interfacing gives the patchwork panel added structure that's perfect for pouches!!
