Happy Brirthday Tom Higgenson! Born February 22nd 1979 Tom Higgenson’s journey into music began not behind a microphone, but behind a drum kit. Growing up in Villa Park, Illinois, he spent his high school years as a drummer for various local groups, including a band called Harvey's Daughter. ​The Birth of the Band ​The shift from the back of the stage to the front happened in 1997 in Lombard, Illinois. Tom decided he wanted to write his own stories and lead his own group. He teamed up with his friend and bassist Ken Fletcher, and recruited Dave Tirio to play drums, forming the original trio that would become the Plain White T's. ​They started as a high-energy power-pop and punk-influenced act, grinding through the Chicago underground scene. They frequently played legendary local venues like the Metro, where Tom had originally been inspired to pursue music after seeing other bands perform. ​A Pivotal Turning Point ​The band’s trajectory—and Tom’s songwriting style—changed forever after a serious car accident in 1999. While driving the band’s van, Tom suffered broken vertebrae and was forced into a back brace for months. During his recovery, his approach to music shifted from simple punk-pop to more introspective and meaningful storytelling. This emotional depth eventually paved the way for the acoustic-driven hits that would define their career. ​The band’s name itself is a nod to timeless simplicity.
