Zebras are iconic African equids best known for their striking black-and-white striped coats, which serve as a sophisticated form of evolutionary protection. Each zebra possesses a unique stripe pattern, acting much like a human fingerprint, which helps individuals recognize one another within a herd. Beyond social identification, these stripes provide a “motion dazzle” effect that confuses predators like lions and hyenas during a chase, making it difficult for them to single out an individual target. Recent scientific studies also suggest that the stripes play a crucial role in thermoregulation and deterring biting flies, as the high- contrast patterns interfere with the insects’ polarized light perception. Highly social and resilient, zebras live in tight-knit family groups called harems, typically consisting of one stallion, several mares, and their offspring. They are primary grazers, spending the majority of their day consuming various grasses that are often too tough or nutrient-poor for other herbivores, which makes them vital “pioneer” grazers that prepare the landscape for more selective feeders. While they may appear docile, zebras are exceptionally brave and powerful; they are known to deliver bone-shattering kicks and fierce bites to defend their kin from threats. Their keen senses of hearing and vision, combined with their ability to run at speeds up to 65 km/h, ensure their survival across the vast savannas and mountainous terrains they inhabit.
