PDA autism is defined as pathalogical demand avoidance or persistent drive for autonomy. It might look like defiance from an outide perspective but there is so much more happening. This is how I explain PDA autism to people in my life so they can better understand me and support me💗 #autism #autismawarness #pdaautism

Here’s what you’re looking at: a real-life autism PDA moment where we go from window-down chaos to calm conversation in just a 6 minute #autism #pda #pathalogicaldemandavoidance #cognitive #redirection

This is a further explanation to yesterdays post on PDA autism. These are the most common negative comments I have been receiving and these are my explanations to them. #autism #pdaautism

One could argue that parenting a child with Pathological Demand Avoidance is harder… PDA is recognized as one of 5 types of autism spectrum in the UK, and by very knowledgeable therapists in the US. It is not yet in the DSM. It can be so extreme that it takes on the negative traits of schizophrenia (not the positive traits which are delusions and hallucinations). How to talk with someone with PDA: Be respectful: Avoid using words like "need", "now", "must", and "urgently". Be calm: Don't take it personally. Be flexible: Be ready to scale back demands or change your approach if the person starts to panic. Be indirect: Find ways to "ask without asking". For example, instead of saying "You need to get dressed now", you could say "The clothes are on the bed, I'm happy to help" and then walk away. Use declarative language: Use statements, comments, or observations. Rephrase: Try talking about an object rather than a person. Start requests with "please": This can make a big difference. Make the person feel useful: Use words like "us", "we", "let's", and "together". Show appreciation: Thank the person for doing something difficult or helpful. Give indirect praise: Some people with PDA crave positive attention and recognition, but don't like receiving compliments or praise. Thanks #neurodivergent_minds - “PDA is so hard It gets confused for anxiety or bad behavior but this is a real thing. What can happen is when there’s demands (rules, instructions, social rules, expectations) this can cause a number of things including sensory overload. The nervous system gets into a flight, fight, or freeze state. PDA has levels to it. On one end it can be distractions all the way to aggression or complete shut down.” #mentalhealthawareness #neurodivergence #audhd #adhd #neuroaffirming #mentalhealth #parenting #therapistsofinstagram

Autism PDA is not about being difficult. It is about survival. For my daughter, going back to Burger King was not spoiling her. It was restoring safety to her nervous system. PDA kids live in a constant fight-or-flight state, and rituals like this bring them back to calm. Co-regulation is what every autistic child deserves. Many autistic adults never had this support and are still healing from the absence of it. That is why I share these moments to build a culture of understanding, regulation, and compassion.

Have you ever used Declarative Language when speaking to someone who is PdA? It involved reframing how you say things, which is really difficult, into a statement rather than a command or instruction. #declarativelanguage #pda #autismawareness

Pathological Demand Avoidance••• Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is very often associated with autism for many people. I definitely struggle with PDA and it is hard to think of why my brain experiences this extreme aversion to anything perceived as a demand. In this video I go over some reasons I have come up with. I would love to hear of any reasons you think of too! It is important to be aware of the reasonings behind PDA because so often people and especially children are labeled as defiant when in reality they are struggling and experiencing extreme anxiety and stress over perceived demands. With me joining a PDA parent group tonight I thought i should do a post on just a glimpse of living with PDA. I mean, I assume this is how neurotypicals are but I don't really know as I only raise autistic ones. 🤣🤣 Also needed do a shameless plug of my book Raising the SEN-betweeners = there is a chapter on PDA in there if you wish to know more. #pdalife #pdamum #pda #pathalogicaldemandavoidance #neurotypical #neurodivergent

I misspoke- we don’t take in 18% more sensory input, we hear 18 decibels lower than allistic counterparts and can be equally sensitive to other senses. But you get the point. #pdaautistic #pathologicaldemandavoidance #autistic #audhd #adhd #murrietatherapist #temeculatherapist #temeculavalley #menifee #lakeelsinore

Comment “PDA” to join my community 🤯 Does your child with PDA come home and explode? Below are 10 signs they’re masking at school. 1️⃣ “All smiles and compliance” in class but total collapse at home A child who appears calm, follows rules, then melts down at home is this “fizzy bottle” effect and is classic PDA masking 2️⃣ Teachers surprised by your description of home behaviour Comments like “She’s so quiet here!” often mean school presentation and home reality don’t match 3️⃣ Suppressing stims or sensory overload all day Self‑stimming may be hidden in school but resurface once they’re in a safe space 4️⃣ Overly perfect or compliant during lessons They might appear attentive and eager but this perfectionism is a mask, not true engagement 5️⃣ Excuses, distractions or topic changes when asked to do tasks Avoidance strategy chats, questions, diversion are used instead of direct refusal 6️⃣ Vigilance to adult expectations Hyper aware of teacher tone, unspoken cues and constantly adapting to stay “invisible 7️⃣ Physical symptoms like headaches or exhaustion on school days Stress hides in their body with fatigue or tummy upset by afternoon 8️⃣ Shutting down internally despite external compliance They seem compliant but are zoning out or withdrawing mentally under the surface 9️⃣ School refusal or highly avoidant of certain classes/events Masking wares thin, child finds excuses to avoid school or specific settings 🔟 Split personas: “school self” vs “home self” Distinct behaviour patterns, one polished at school, another expressive and emotionally raw at home ✅ Why recognising masking matters These signs show that school appropriate behaviour doesn’t equal wellness. Persistent masking drains emotional reserves and may prevent your child from getting the understanding and support they truly need. #pdaautism #pathologicaldemandavoidance #pdaparenting #autism #autismawareness

If you're wondering about early signs of PDA autism (Pathological Demand Avoidance also know as Pervasive Drive forAutonomy ) in babies or toddlers, here are some behaviours I noticed with my own child. You might relate, or spot things you hadn't maybe considered before. Other signs you might notice include intense need for control, difficulty with transitions, and anxiety around demands. Every child is unique, so not all signs will be present, but trust your instincts. Have you noticed similar behaviours in your little one? Share your experiences below. Here is a one minute training to help you determine whether the PDA neurotype describes your child. I generally look for these five things: 👉 survival drive for autonomy that consistently overrides other survival instincts. 👉 equalizing behavior that looks controlling to get back to a place of nervous system safety. 👉 “high masking” (looks like two different versions of oneself). Not every PDA child or teen will be high masking especially once they hit burnout. 👉 constant need for undivided attention and signals of nervous system safety. 👉cumulative nature of nervous system stress which causes the disability to fluctuate.
