THE TRUTH ABOUT ANTERIOR PELVIC TILT: Most people take a muscular-centric perspective to posture and anterior pelvic tilt. They think muscles get tight, which then affects the position of the pelvis, which then affects the rest of the posture. Not quite the full picture. A key concept to understand about the body is that skeletal position dictates muscular function. What’s actually going on is that the pelvis is forward as a result of a forward center of gravity. Our center of gravity moves forward because dumping our pelvis in anterior pelvic tilt allows us to access compensatory motions that we can genuinely access at our hips. Usually hip internal rotation or hip extension. So because we seek those compensatory strategies, the body’s center of gravity is now forward. It is THEN that the muscles get tight over time because they lose variability to move into different lengths as often as they should. Understanding this is the key to unlocking your posture. And no, anterior pelvic tilt isn’t a death sentence. It’s not something you should be worried about unless your movement restrictions are preventing you from living the life you want, or training the way you want. If they are, then understanding that APT could be representing some compensatory movement strategies can be helpful. But I strongly discourage people from overly fixating on it, as posture isn’t necessarily correlated with pain. Once you start noticing how common it is, it’s hard to un-see it! This isn’t always a problem that needs to be fixed.
