The returns of That Hand! This time, it’s the inks! As I recall you all really liked seeing this hand get penciled, and now it’s getting inked! This Krampus piece is coming along nicely. I’m using a Zebra Fude Double Sided Brushpen Comic book art, traditional inks.

do you prefer small sketchbooks or big canvases? That time I penciled really tightly and detailed and then wore myself out because I still had to ink the pages. My current process is to pencil very lightly and loosely and then go straight to inks. Another incredible commission for SDCC! 🌊 Hokusai’s Wave is such an iconic piece, and so very complicated. I penciled the art onto a piece of 9x12 illustration board.  I added Usagi and his friends in the center, directly facing that great wave. The inks were done with my Koh-i-Noor Artpen and Platinum Carbon ink. I love this ink from Japan.  It’s permanent and waterproof, but takes a while to dry completely so I had to work slowly. I taped the borders with painters’ tape, and used a masking frisket to cover everything I needed to protect.  It took a while to cut out the details of the wave. I’m not a colorist by any means and the colors of the original prints vary drastically, so I approximated the correct color and shade of the backgrounds and, using a wide watercolor brush, painted in the sky. I waited a half hour or so for the sky to dry and removed the frisket and painted in the detaisl using a liquid watercolor.  The original colors are actually a lot more subtle than at first glance. Once the ocean was colored I set to work on the people, then finally the dots of sea foam. Something a little different today. Penciled this page out months ago and rediscovered it in a stack of paper, doing some cleaning and rearranging. Will see where this goes. It went to a project that I had decided on a different direction, and then got pushed aside. Anyway, this will have a more traditional comic book style than the detail heavy work (which goes on).
